Competency 4:
Social workers understand quantitative and qualitative research methods and their respective roles in advancing a science of social work and in evaluating their practice. Social workers know the principles of logic, scientific inquiry, and culturally informed and ethical approaches to building knowledge. Social workers understand that evidence that informs practice derives from multi-disciplinary sources and multiple ways of knowing. They also understand the processes for translating research findings into effective practice. Social workers:
use practice experience and theory to inform scientific inquiry and research;
The Signature Assignment in SWK 461 will require students to write a research proposal.
1. Students will need to write an Introduction to the research proposal describing major issues the study will attempt to address while addressing the broader foundation of the problem area. Student will also describe briefly the background of the problem area and why the study is needed. Student will describe the practical or theoretical significance of the problem area referring to the larger context of scholarly literature.
2. For the literature review, students will demonstrate their information seeking skills by identifying useful literature while critically appraising previously published research studies. The Literature Review will need to be organized in either chronological, thematic or methodological manners. The Literature Review must distinguish from what has been done to what needs to be done, rationalize the significance of your problem area, provide historical context, identify relationships between variables, relate ideas and theory to social work applications, all in an effort to synthesize and gain new perspectives.
3. In the Methods section students will create subsections and discuss in detail the Research Design, Sample, Instrumentation, Data Collection and a Data Analysis plan.
Research Design- student must classify which type of design (Single subject, One group, Two group designs). Students must briefly discuss the type of design, quantitative, qualitative or mixed. (1-2 paragraphs.)
Sample-students must describe a sampling method (probability or non-probability). Students must also discuss the strategy or why they chose the sampling methods. (1-2 paragraphs.)
Instrumentation-Student will describe how they will measure the variables. Student must provide a copy of instrument (placed in Appendix). Student must cite standardized measuring instrument (if applicable). Statement on reliability and validity. 1 paragraph for each variable
Data Collection-Student will describe how the data is to be collected-in detail, so that enough information is provided that the study could be duplicated. (1-2 paragraphs)
Data Analysis-student will make a statement why the data collection method is appropriate for the data analysis method. Students will submit a data analysis plan.
Example of plan (name of variable, name of instrument, measurement level, when data will be collected, how it will be analyzed). See workbook p. 151 (1-2 paragraphs)

• Methodology (2 pages -roughly)

iii.Instrumentation-student will describe how the will variables be measured
iii. Data collection- student describes how the data will be gathered
iv. Data Analysis-student will describe how data will be analyzed
200 pts. 8-10 pages APA style, 10-12 references Appendix, use a Heading structure for each area
