Qualitative research tends to be inductive in its reasoning, tries to build explanations of phenomena through its observations, and tends to involve a more personal, social approach to collecting data.  However, it tends to be criticized as being less scientific in its methods than more quantitative research. 
Answer & Question:
1) Is this criticism of qualitative research fair?  What steps can you, as a researcher, take to reduce this potential stigma in conducting qualitative research?  Is there  a way to make qualitative research more scientific?  How?
I would not go as far as to deem the criticism of qualitative research as “fair”, but more so- understandable. Much of what we think of as “facts” is closely conflated with numbers alone, so when other realms of data collection that go beyond just numbers and touch on real life experiences, attitudes, etc are used, that is where the criticism ripens because of that lack of more quantitative context.  I would suggest that a good way to go about trying to reduce stigma would be to make sure your information is as credible as possible. Information should be able to be confirmed by other researches in order to establish a dependable nature. Also, by thoroughly acknowledging any limitations or antithesis arguments that may exist within the context of your study/research to ensure that there is consistency of the data interpretations. One could make qualitative research “more scientific” by triangulating different types of data and research, such as incorporating a mix of both qualitative and quantitative research into your study.

2) Imagine you wanted to learn about the goth subculture in New Orleans.  What combination of qualitative methods learned this week would you use to collect your data and generate observations?  Describe, in detail, the way you would use these techniques to explore the subculture and how it would contribute to your generation of knowledge on the topic. 
I would go about undergoing this research topic by using the purposive sampling method, which is when the researcher chooses a topic then selects participants likely to have relevant information about the topic. I would try to do some research about popular locations for that social sub group- maybe clothing stores, nightclubs, other events catering to this group that might be listed on social media, etc to try to make connections with those who may have relevant information. I would perhaps advertise on social media platforms that are connected to these locations/people to try to find participants. Once participants in the goth subculture were found, I would then execute a semi-structured interview about various things pertaining to their lifestyle within the culture and then analyze patterns or themes that I find in order to create a more comprehensive understanding of those actually living in that experience.
