RTI, MTSS, And Special Education Identification Processes

Students must qualify for special education services under one of the disability categories outlined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. There is a specific process involved in identifying students as having a disability. This process includes a group of educators called a Child Study Team who help determine interventions for students. This process can include RTI, MTSS, and the special education identification process. Special education teachers will be involved in all steps of these processes.

Create a 250-500 word brochure for families of students who may have disabilities. In your brochure, include the following

· An explanation of RTI, MTSS, and the special education identification process

· A visual to help families understand the explanation of RTI, MTSS, and the special education identification process

· An overview of procedural safeguards and parental rights

· A minimum of three local or national resources to support families who have children with disabilities

Support your findings with a minimum of two scholarly resources.

While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success enter.

Understanding Special Education

Understanding Special Education Paper Assignment Instructions

Overview

Special education provides educational opportunities for students who need additional support to make academic or social progress in schools. All educators need to understand the components of special education because effective special education programs include collaboration with a variety of educators, administrators, and school staff.

Instructions

For this assignment, you will write a 1,000-word research-paper in current APA format that focuses on the characteristics of students receiving special education, the laws governing special education, service delivery models for students eligible for special education services, and Biblical principles that support the inclusion of special education services in schools. The paper should contain the following sections:

1. Introduction: Describe special education and why it is necessary. Include a Scriptural reference to support the necessity of special education in schools. Scripture must be supported by at least one sentence that explains how it relates to your discussion.

2. Laws: Provide a brief history of the law that established special education in schools (IDEA) and some of the important components of that law (FAPE, LRE). Citations from at least one scholarly resource are required.

3. Special Education Services: Describe the characteristics of students who receive special education services. How does a student become eligible for special education services? What kinds of services are provided under special education? Citations from at least one scholarly resource are required.

4. Service Delivery Models: Special education services can be administered in a variety of ways. Describe three tiers of special education service delivery environments from least restrictive to most restrictive. Discuss the type of student who would be best served in each type of environment. Citations from at least one scholarly resource are required.

5. Conclusion: Summarize the information shared in the previous sections of the paper. Include any additional information or insight you have gleaned from the process of writing this paper. Include a scriptural reference in the conclusion paragraph. Scripture should be supported by at least one sentence that explains how it applies to your discussion.

A title page and a reference page are required for this assignment.

Disability Comparison Template

As part of the IEP team, general education teachers and special education teachers must possess an understanding of the eligibility categories used to determine whether a student is eligible to receive special education services. General education teachers and special education teachers must collaborate and communicate in a professional and articulate manner with school psychologists, related service providers, administrators, colleagues, and families when determining eligibility for special education services and providing a rationale to support the need for delivery of services.

Part 1: Disability Comparison Template

Using the study materials and your research, complete the “Disability Comparison Template,” which includes a Part 1 chart focused on IDEA disability categories and the Part 2 chart focused on common, specific learning disabilities. Follow the example provided in the “Autism” row in the template. Document the specific resources used to complete the assignment on the “References” page of the template.

Part 2: Simulations

To gain a greater understanding of the challenges faced by students with disabilities, particularly those with dyslexia, complete the five simulation activities from “Through Your Child’s Eyes” as part of the topic assignment. Follow the steps below to complete each of the five simulations:

  1. Access “Through Your Child’s Eye” on the Understood website.
  2. Select “Experience It.”
  3. Select a grade level that is appropriate to your field of study.
  4. You will complete each of the five simulations presented.
  5. Select whichever category you prefer first, and then select “Continue” to get an overview of the simulation.
  6. Select “Get Started,” read “Here’s How It Works….” and then select “Continue.”
  7. Select “Start” when you are ready to begin the simulation activity.
  8. Repeat Steps 1-7 until all five simulations are completed.

Be prepared to discuss what the simulation experiences taught you about how to recognize some of the typical signs of dyslexia and how dyslexia can affect other areas of learning and life, not just reading.

Part 3: Reflection

In 250-500 words, consider that you learned from researching, completing the matrix, and participating in the simulations by discussing the following.

  • Explain why it is important for teachers to be able to identify developmental and individual differences and recognize some of the typical signs of various disabilities when interacting with students.
  • Describe how you can use what you experienced while completing the simulations to help you better articulate the challenges faced by students with disabilities to those who are non-disabled. Include discussion of how this experience can be used to help you collaborate and seek best practices for working with students with a wide range of disabilities.
  • Discuss how having a basic understanding of the ways various disabilities affect learning and other areas of a student’s life can assist teachers in responding to the needs of individuals with disabilities.

Support the assignment with a minimum of three scholarly resources.

Submit the completed “Disability Comparison Template” and the written reflection to the instructor.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
