Assignment 1.2: Significant Event Final Paper
Due Week 8 and worth 190 points

Note: Students will turn in this assignment twice: first as a draft (Week 4 Assignment) and then as a final paper (Week 8 Assignment). Students will submit first draft of the assignment and then submit the final draft after receiving feedback from the professor and making the recommended changes. They will be graded separately for each submission of the assignment

In order to revise Assignment 1.1 use professor feedback of the first draft you submitted in Week 4.

Before revising the assignment you should:

  • Review the feedback from your professor
  • Review the criteria for Assignment 1.1; make sure you have addressed the criteria thoroughly.

Select a significant event (either positive or negative) that occurred before you reached adulthood and that has had a life-shaping effect on your life. In this assignment, you will use what you’ve learned in Weeks 1 thru 4 of this course and base your paper on your readings, along with information from library research, to discuss psychological aspects of your event.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

  1. Briefly describe your significant event (one to two [1-2] sentences).
  2. Describe your event in terms of at least two (2) different perspectives in psychology (e.g., behavioral, cognitive, psychodynamic, cultural/social, etc.)
  3. Determine what learning (e.g., classical, operant, etc.) may have resulted from your event, or arisen because of your event.
  4. Discuss why the memory of the event you described may or may not be completely accurate.
  5. Use at least two (2) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note:  One of these resources may be your textbook. Articles from professional journals are certainly a high quality resource. Magazine and newspaper articles are also accepted for this assignment. Articles published on the Internet may also be suitable, if they originate with credible persons or organizations. Please note that articles from Wikipedia, ask.com, and the like are not suitable.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Relate psychological concepts to real-world situations.
  • Describe the major theories of learning, memory, cognition, consciousness, development, and social psychology.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in psychology.

Discuss the physiological components involved in the weight loss program.

Many Americans believe that they are overweight, by a few pounds to a few hundred pounds. Because of this, weight loss systems are big business. For this assignment, you are to select a weight loss system and evaluate it in terms of the information about the physiology of ingestive behavior covered this module.

  • Find a website, a brochure, a popular article, or an advertisement about weight control that proposes a mechanism for loss of excess weight.
  • Document the key proposals in terms of the main claims for success of the program (e.g., restriction of fat and small portions).
  • Describe the reasons provided for the effectiveness of the program (e.g., a full stomach reduces hunger).
  • Discuss the physiological components involved in the weight loss program. Clearly express an understanding of the physiology of the process of hunger, satiation, eating, and drinking as relevant for the weight loss method being described (e.g., long periods between meals would be likely to reduce blood sugar levels).
  • Present a critique of the materials based on the module information on eating and weight regulation.
  • Evaluate the proposal and suggest whether you would try this weight loss system or recommend it to someone else. Explain why or why not.

For this assignment, you are required to cite, at a minimum, the online course and the textbook for the course. Additional sources are welcome. Scholarly sources are preferred and can be found in the Argosy University library located under the Academic Resources section of Course Home. For reputable web sources, look for .gov or .edu sites as opposed to .com sites. Do not use Wikipedia.

Your paper should be double-spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font, and with normal 1-inch margins; written in APA style; and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page and a reference page. The body of the paper should be between 3 and 4 pages.

What type of parenting style would lend itself well to creating a healthy self-esteem? Why?

Self-Esteem in Children

In the US, a common worry of parents is whether their children have a high self-esteem.  In the age of increased awareness of the ramifications of bullying behavior (physical, verbal, and relational-aggression), as well as increased competition it is no wonder parents are concerned.  Aleksandar is a coordinator of athletic programs for Centervale.  In the past, parents have insisted on participation trophies for all kids playing sports between the ages of 5 and 11.  There is currently a debate in Centervale regarding whether participation trophies for everyone should continue through middle school as well.  Some parents think it will help with self-esteem, while other parents recall never getting participation trophies when they were growing up and think losing can be a good lesson.  Think about what you have learned in this module about physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development in middle childhood.

  1. What type of parenting style would lend itself well to creating a healthy self-esteem? Why?
  2. What would your recommendation be to the sports organizer who wonders if everyone should receive a trophy just for participating?
  3. What arguments can be made on both sides of the debate?
  4. Remember to support your responses by citing your weekly readings from the online notes and the textbook.

Write your initial response in 4–5 paragraphs. Support your statements with readings and research. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

By Saturday, March 28, 2015, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, April 1, 2015, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.
