This is a research focused paper. You are to select a disorder (Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, etc.) or a category of mental conditions (i.e., Anxiety Disorders, Thought Disorders, Depressive Disorders, etc.) as defined by the DSM-IV or DSM-V. (If you do not have access to a DSM, you will find a copy in the reserve section on the 2nd floor of the school library: call number RC455.2 C4 D54.) Write a summary of current research related to an issue using at least two professional journal articles (anything published since January 2011). An issue must address diagnosis, risk factors, etiology, OR treatment of the disorder(s) you have selected. You can incorporate other articles published after January 2011.

DO NOT USE THE SUE TEXTBOOK AS A SOURCE IN WRITING YOUR PAPER! This is an advance course requiring you to use original source materials. Everything must be based on the professional articles and othe professional sources like the DSM.

Address the controversies and the strengths and weaknesses you see in the research you’re citing. Address contradictory conclusions by the papers’ authors and take a side, elaborating on why you agree (or disagree) with the different positions.

Examples of professional journals include Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Psychosomatic Research, Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy, The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, Journal of Affective Disorders. There are literally hundreds of professional journals. PsycARTICLES and PsycINFOis a good source for these and are accessible through the school library’s Article Database. There are also electronic journals available through the school’s library. Be aware of online journal articles identified using Google and other popular search engines. These journals tend not to be primary resources.

Take Note: Psychology Today, WebMD and Psychcentral.com, AllPsych Online and other popular magazines and websites are not professional resources. Do not use these.

Be discerning. Some journals are better sources than others. Not all journals are juried. Some are on the fringe and reflect points of view that are of questionable scientific validity. Use of these and popular magazines/websites can negatively impact your grade.

Your reaction paper will be written using the American Psychological Association (APA) style and format, 6thedition. Your first step in the writing process will be to view the APA Video Tutorial located at the top of your Moodle page in the right hand corner.

Your paper will be an analysis of one or more movie characters from a movie selected from the list provided below.This paper is NOT a summary of the movie; you will use at least three (3) major concepts (not just terms) from your textbook and analyze the character(s) in the movie using these psychological concepts to explain why they act the way they do in the movie.

In addition to using the concepts in the textbook as references, you will also support the statements in your paper using peer-reviewed articles from credible resources that provide research-based information to help explain your character’s behavior. Your reference page should include a minimum of five (5) references, one reference to your textbook and four additional resources.

When writing the analysis of your movie character (the body of the paper), you should refer to your textbook and additional references to support your ideas of why the character is behaving in a certain manner.The body of the paper should be a minimum of four full pages and no longer than 5 pages.In-text citations using APA formatting should be made in the body of your paper when using your reference material.
