Visual Representation of Public Health Leadership Theory

Section 2

Scholar-Practitioner Project: Visual Representation of Public Health Leadership Theory

Having a Public Health Leadership Theory is essential to any public health leader. With a well-constructed theory, you integrate leadership perspectives into practice in order to offer solutions to public health problems. Also, with a visual representation of your theory, you may present another way to highlight your research with effective design and theory implementation.

For this Project Assignment, you complete another part of your Public Health Leadership Theory based upon your understanding of leadership perspectives you have reviewed in this course. In addition, you must use a systems thinking approach in the development of your visual representation of your personal Public Health Leadership Theory. As you post your visual representation, you may find using a computer scanner helpful in scanning your image and attaching it to your post.

Write (4–5 pages):

This week you will provide a visual representation of your public health leadership theory. It can be a table, schematic diagram, graph, or any other representation you choose. Please feel free to be creative. However, the focus MUST be on leadership. Be sure to provide a narrative explanation that shows how the developed theory can close the “gap” identified in the first part of the project. Additionally explain how it incorporates system thinking. Remember your theory can be based on those that we have learned about or your own. There is no wrong theory. What matters is the explanation of how it addresses the gap and uses system thinking. While this doesn’t have to be addressed now, keep in mind the last part of the project will involve presenting a methodology that tests the developed theory empirically. Let’s help one another with the project. Post your questions and thoughts in the “Contact the Instructor” area. Please feel free to weigh in on your colleagues comments.

Support your Project with specific references to all resources and current literature used in its preparation. You are to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.

JOHN SNOW/COMMUNICABLE & INFECTIOUS DISEASE

Question description

For your final project, you will be researching an individual and their contribution to community and public health. Because of the size of this project, you will be doing the first part of this project in Week 3 then adding the final portion in Week 5. You have the option of writing a paper or putting together a presentation. Details are below the outline. Overall, you will be researching an historical figure in the public health world, their contribution to public health, and how their work helped shape the public health system. Furthermore, you will be analyzing how their contribution from the past continues to contribute to today’s public health system and how it might guide future work within the industry.

Follow this outline to help formulate your paper or presentation:

ACTION: Select one of the historical figures and their associated public health topic: THE HISTORICAL FIGURE I HAVE CHOSEN IS: JOHN SNOW/COMMUNICABLE & INFECTIOUS DISEASE ( ALSO FORMAT 1 WHICH IS THE WRITTEN PAPER)

  • Margaret Higgins Sanger/Reproductive health
  • Rachel Carson/Environmental health
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt/Health care administration
  • John Snow/Communicable and infectious disease
  • Luther T. Terry/Smoking
  • W. E. B. DuBois/Social determinants of health
  • Larry Kramer/Health activism
  • An individual of your own choice: YOU MUST OBTAIN INSTRUCTOR APPROVAL IN ADVANCE

ACTION: Research the individual’s background

  • GRADED ELEMENT: Describe your selected person’s biographical background (i.e. experience).
    • HELP: This can include resume elements such as birthdate, location, education, and brief statement of their contribution to public health. (Reminder: biographical information can be easily plagiarized. Please do not copy from your biographical websites. Paraphrase and/or quote and cite everything according to APA.)

ACTION: Research the barriers and issue of the time

  • GRADED ELEMENT: Analyze the climate of the time period in terms of political, socioeconomic, environmental and technological context in which this person worked
    • HELP: Think about whether this person was up against resistance or was their work welcomed. [For example, if you were writing on Abraham Lincoln and the abolition of slavery, you would note that slavery was prevalent and accepted at the time and the change was welcomed by some and rejected by others]
  • GRADED ELEMENT: Examine the personal beliefs of your person that prompted this work.
    • HELP: You are basically addressing the question: “Why did this person get involved with the issue at the time?” [In continuing the Lincoln example above, you would note that black people were considered property, not people; yet Lincoln believed everyone had equal rights regardless of skin color].

ACTION: Think about how this person overcame the barriers and issues

  • GRADED ELEMENT: Examine how this individual overcame and/or confronted any adversities to succeed in his/her task
    • HELP: Questions to consider: What did the person specifically do? Did they have any allies? How did their actions succeed/fail?

ACTION: Think about the importance of the contribution to community/public health at the time

  • GRADED ELEMENT: Describe the final outcome of this individual’s contribution to community and/or public health
    • HELP: Think about this question: What occurred as a result of this person’s action?
  • GRADED ELEMENT: Explain what his/her contribution did for overall community and/or public health at the time
    • HELP: Think about this question: What was the purpose for the community and/or nation? [In the Lincoln example, the explanation would involve a national recognition of human rights of all people, regardless of skin color]
  • GRADED ELEMENT: Explain why this contribution was so important at that particular point in history
    • HELP: Think about this question: What made this important for our nation? [In the Lincoln example, you would answer the question: Why was it so important that Lincoln freed the slaves?]

You have a choice of which format you wish to present your findings:
Format 1: Written Paper

  • Must be at least 4 pages in length (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Describe a significanat health issue in your community or state

Question description

What are YOU going to do about it?

In the past weeks, you have examined and explored the challenges and issues facing delivery of public health services in a given community and across the nation. The goal of public health is to prevent disease and promote health.

To that end, take a moment to review your own communities health needs through a purview of current events, your own setting by informally interviewing public health professionals, or reviewing national databases like the ones listed below:

America’s Health Rankings (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. (2015). Retrieved from http://www.americashealthrankings.org/
The Commonwealth Fund. (2015). Overall Ranking, 2014 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Retrieved from http://datacenter.commonwealthfund.org/#ind=1/sc=1

For this discussion, you are asked to do the following:

  1. Describe a significanat health issue in your community or state.
  2. Compare its significance to the national priorities of Healthy People 2020 goals (is it a national priority or just one found in your state/community).
  3. Explain what type of effort it will take to fully address it (leadership skills, financing, organizational buy-in, stakeholders, perceptions, barriers)
  4. Evaluate the efforts YOU can take to address this issue. (As a public health practitioner, what is YOUR role such as: Will you develop, lead or be part of a public health program to address the issue? Will you work on financing, organizational buy-in, stakeholders…what are you going to do to address this concern?)
