1.How does the epidemiologic triad apply to health issues we see in the hospital? What are some common diagnoses in the acute care setting? What about in the community setting? 3.What are some of the causes for increases in healthcare costs in recent years, as outlined in the chapter?  Brainstorm some examples that you have actually witnessed in the clinical setting. Can any of these factors be modified? What could nurses do to help cut down on costs related to the different factors?

4.Why are the causes of morbidity and mortality in other countries different than in the United States? In what ways are they the same? Why do those differences exist? What types of services & interventions are needed in less developed countries to help with their health issues?

Case Study Assignment (Part 4):
Directions: Below is a case study presentation of a patient with a condition covered in Chapter 9. Read the case study, and answer the questions below. Some questions will ask for information not included within this chapter. Use your textbook, a medical dictionary, or any other reference material you choose to answer these questions.
Patient is a 36-year-old businessman who was first seen in the office with complaints of feeling generally run down, ascites, intermittent diarrhea, and weight loss. He states he has been aware of these symptoms for approximately six months, but admits it may have been coming on for closer to one year. A screening test for mononucleosis was negative. A chest X-ray was negative for pneumonia or bronchitis, but did reveal enlarged nodules in the left thoracic cavity. In spite of a 35-pound weight loss, he has abdominal swelling and splenomegaly detected with abdominal palpation. Abdominal ultrasound confirmed generalized splenomegaly and a 3-cm tumor in the spleen. A lymphangiogram identified the thoracic nodules to be enlarged lymph nodes. Biopsies taken from the splenic tumor and thoracic lymph nodes confirmed the diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The patient underwent splenectomy for removal of the primary tumor. He will be referred to an oncologist to begin treatment for the lymphadenomas.
Critical Thinking Questions
Answer the questions below regarding this case study. Do not just copy words out of the case study; translate all medical terms. To answer some of these questions, you may need to look up information from another chapter of this textbook.
1. What complaints caused the patient to go to the doctor?
2. One of these terms in your first answer has not yet been defined. Look it up in the gastroenterology chapter and define the term.
3. Which tests were negative? What does the term negative mean in this situation?
4. Which tests revealed pathology?
5. What surgical procedure did he undergo?
6. What type of doctor was he referred to following surgery? Why?
