1. You manage a 30-bed medical-surgical unit in a small community hospital and have a background in managing cardiac care units. The Director of Nursing has asked you to take part in a planning session with other hospital administrators. The Director feels that expanding cardiac care services will benefit the facility and the community:

  1. What is the strategic planning process for this project?
  2. Who would be involved in this strategic plan? Who are the stakeholders in the community and within the hospital?
  3. How could you begin to implement this strategy?

What are some of the major issues associated with a plan like this?

2. Read the Case Study 13-1 on page 178 in your textbook. Then answer the following questions:

  1. Determine what could have been done to prevent Jane’s problems, other than what is outlined in the case study.
  2. Explain what time wasters and interruptions are and strategies to minimize their effects?

Outline at least three alternatives to deal with Jane’s problem.

Apply these time management skills to a problem in your own life.

3. Change in healthcare is inevitable. Identify one area within your employment that needs to be changed. Examples include improving a process, or reducing wait times, or improving quality. After discussion with a nurse leader at your place of employment, decide on an issue that requires change, and answer the following questions:

  1. Analyze any issues related to the problem, and map out any alternative solutions.
  2. Illustrate 3 strategies for change including the positive and negative forces for each.
  3. Discuss and apply a change theory to your issue.

How would you answer the questions below that were posed by King based on what you know about current nursing practice?

Imogene King dedicated her life to the profession of nursing, and aimed to create “a conceptual frame of reference for nursing”. In the end, her Theory of Goal Attainment was conceived and she helped to identify several complex interactions that exist in the nurse-client relationship. Similarly, the Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing reflect the various responsibilities and competencies nurses who are masters-prepared are expected to complete and do so safely. As such, students must work towards becoming familiar with the essentials and begin to utilize them as a source of reference for guiding learning and practice. Review the Essentials of Master’s Education document that can be found under the Class Resources tab above Lectures and please examine, Essential IV:Translating and Integrating Scholarship Into Practice, as you reflect and address the following questions:

How would you answer the questions below that were posed by King based on what you know about current nursing practice?

What is the scope of practice of nurse practitioners, nurse educators and nurse leaders, and in what kind of settings do these nursing professionals perform their functions? Are the current goals of nursing similar to those of the past half century? What are the dimensions of practice that have given the field of nursing a unifying focus over time? How important will it be for master’s prepared nurses to be knowledgeable in translating research into practice as our healthcare system stands to undergo significant policy changes in the near future that may leave millions of Americans uninsured and without proper medical care?

  1. Select a theory or conceptual model relevant to your research interest. Determine how the key concepts or variables of interest relate to each other within the selected framework.
  2. If the author explains their theory through a diagram, explain what each part of the diagram means.
  3. Write a paper explaining the model – generally and specifically applied to your topic of interest. Examine strengths and weaknesses of the selected model in general, and as it applies to your research topic. Hint: think about how you would explain this if you were teaching a novice about the theory.
