How do you determine if a hypothesis is true or false?

Respond, support your answer and end the essay with a question, in order to further discussion. After reading this information, is there one item in particular you find confusing?  Post a question regarding the item about which you are most confused so others can help you with it!Reading the Statistical Section of a Research Article.rtfReading the Statistical Section of a Research Article
• How do you determine if a hypothesis is true or false? Researchers select a statistical test based on factors such as the number of variables to be analyzed, the level of measurement of the variables, the sampling procedure and the type of question being researched, e.g. relationship or differences.
• How do you interpret the result of the statistical test in a research article? The result will be reported as a number, e.g. t=4.88, F=3.98, r=.78. (t is a t test, F is an ANOVA and r is a correlation.)
• How do you know if the number reported proves the hypothesis? The numbers reported may be significant or not. In nursing a p value of .05 is often selected to determine significance, e.g. p=.01. A p value of <.05 means that the results are probably not caused by chance, and therefore we are fairly certain that the predicted relationship between the variables actually exists.
How can the researcher be sure that the results are correct? (e.g. that a difference or relationship actually exists between variables)

What do models and theories have in common?

This Assignment targets this course outcome:
Evaluate the application of models of practice to the advanced nurse roles.

What is the difference between a model and a theory?
A model demonstrates the researcher’s interpretation of how concepts are related to one another and is developed based on qualitative research. A theory is a hypothesis tested and measured to explain, predict, describe, and prescribe relationships between concepts and is developed through quantitative research.
In short, the difference between a model and a theory is the amount of proof that exists in demonstrating the outcomes they predict.

What do models and theories have in common?
Both models and theories show relationships between concepts. Models often are precursors to theory development.

Directions
1. Locate a model of practice that you could apply to nursing. It does not need to be a nursing model. Models of practice can be found in leadership, business, education, and technology. Explain how you will use the model you chose in your advanced practice role.

The Quality Assurance assignment is designed for you to look at the Medicare website to get a feel for the 5 Star Quality rating of LTC facilities. This is a very interesting time for LTC communities as this system has been overhauled and for the first time these ratings are tied to reimbursement.
The Star rating of a particular care center is composed of three different pieces, health inspection survey, staffing and quality measures. The health inspection survey is weighted more heavily than the others. Surveys occur every 9-15 months and the surveyors look for deficiencies in the care center. The score from the survey is based on the number and severity of the deficiencies found in the last 3 years on the inspections. A poor health inspection score can be detrimental to a facility, preventing the overall rating from reaching any higher than one star above the health inspection score. Other parts of the calculation are staffing and quality measures. Staffing scores are primarily based on the hours of care each resident receives from nursing staff daily. The quality scores are based on 11 different physical and clinical measures, including the percentage of resident reporting severe pain, and those experiencing falls that result in major injury. Each of these components contributes to the overall Star Rating. Unfortunately, the system is set up so that a limited number of centers can be 5 star, only 10% while 20% will be 1 star centers.

Participate in a hands-on psychological experience and write a 900- to 1200-word paper summarizing your experience and reflecting on how that aspect of psychology applies in real life.

You will be asked to participate in a hands-on psychological experience and write a 900- to 1200-word paper summarizing your experience and reflecting on how that aspect of psychology applies in real life. Include a discussion of the impact of the science of psychology in your life. Suggested experiences include participating in individual or group psychotherapy, or career testing through Brenau services.

Participation in any of these activities would be confidential, and reports would focus only on what you learned about psychology, not on personal disclosure. You may also design a personal hands-on experience relating to psychology. For example, you might choose to watch and review a movie about psychology and interview someone who is in therapy, or you may choose to visit a nursing home or other psychological services provider. All activities must be approved by the faculty member. Some of these activities may span several weeks, such as the therapy, and must be initiated early in the semester to ensure completion.

Choice of these movies: Make sure your activities add up to 3 hours altogether. Ideally, your activities would be interrelated through a common theme:

  1. Watch a movie that relates to an aspect of psychology and review the movie from the standpoint of integrating information you learned in class and that you read in the text with what was portrayed in the movie. Movie suggestions: A Beautiful MindAs Good as it Gets, 12 Angry Men, What about Bob, 50 First Dates, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Awakenings, The Notebook. A Clockwork Orange,or The Soloist.
