Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using ethnographic methods.

Please review the following short answer options and select which ones you would like to address. Each short answer response must be at least 2-3 sentences long. Be mindful of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Select ONE of the following from Chapter 2:

1)    Each method of social research comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. This means that there is not necessarily a “right” answer to the question of which method should be used for a project. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using ethnographic methods.

2)    Every discipline that does research on humans needs a code of ethics in order to protect its research subjects. While it’s easy to see that medical research could harm people if not carried out ethically, the risks associated with sociological research may seem more subtle. Describe these risks.

3)    In everyday life, it is assumed that science provides access to objective truths that will never change. However, the philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn argues that truth is relative and dependent upon the paradigm through which you see the world. Explain what a paradigm is and how the scientific method can lead to paradigm shifts.

Explain two ways that feminists have sought to critique or transform Western ethical ideas in the history of philosophy.

Instructions: There will be one discussion in this week.  Please select one of the prompts from the set below and post it as an initial post in the discussion this week.

  1. Choose an applied ethics issue from one of the previous weeks and explain how one working from a feminist ethical perspective would respond to that issue.  How would this person define the issue and what actions would the person take to demonstrate his or her ethical beliefs?  Describe how this response differs from a utilitarian, deontological, and/or virtue ethics response.  Use specific information from the theories and readings to support your claims.
  1. Utilize feminist ethics to examine the applied ethics topics in the course.  For example, what does a care ethic look like when applied to business or war?  What would be the best way to run a business from the perspective of feminist ethics?  How would a feminist ethic transform the way that the military functions or goes about fighting in wars?  If you are not interested in these issues, you can respond to the topics of the environment, animal rights, or medical ethics.  Be sure to utilize support from the readings while explaining your perspective on these issues.
  1. Using Virginia Held’s article “Feminist Transformations of Ethical Theory” as a foundation, explain three things that you did not know about feminist thought that you found interesting and/or informative.  What were those things?  Why are they interesting or informative?  How do they relate to the view that you now hold of ethics and how one can live a good life?  Explain why you do or do not think that feminist ethics could be a fruitful transformation of ethical theory and practice in the Western tradition.  Be sure to utilize the readings from the week and specific examples that relate to your analysis.
  1. Explain two ways that feminists have sought to critique or transform Western ethical ideas in the history of philosophy.  Now that you have studied multiple ethical theories, explain which ideas you most agree with from these critiques and which you believe to be weaker than the others.  Be sure to utilize what you have learned and quotes from the readings to support your position.

What steps should Dr. Matthews take to ethically implement her decision and monitor its effects?

Irina, a 13-year-old girl of Arabic cultural heritage living in Boston, Massachusetts, was brought by her parents to a hospital emergency room after an assault by a stranger. Based on her injuries, the hospital staff suspected that the attacker had also sexually assaulted the girl, but she and her parents refused medical evaluations for rape. The family received a referral to see Janet Matthews, a clinical psychologist specializing in adolescent trauma. During their initial meeting with Dr. Matthews, the parents asked the psychologist not to discuss any sexual aspects of the assault with their daughter but to treat the psychological trauma from the assault in general. They told the psychologist that admitting a rape had taken place would cast a stigma on their daughter and make her ineligible to be married to men in their closely knit ethnic community. When asked in private, the girl also requested that sexual issues not be discussed for the same reason.

Ethical Dilemma

Dr. Matthews does not know if she should agree to the parents’ and child’s request.

Case Study Two Worksheet

Respond to the following questions in 250 words each question.

Why is this an ethical dilemma? Which APA Ethical Principles help frame the nature of the dilemma?

How might Irina’s age and parents’ involvement in the referral affect how Dr. Matthews can resolve the dilemma? How might the state law on treatment of minors and HIPAA rule on access of guardians to a minor’s health care record influence Dr. Matthews’ decision?

How are APA Ethical Standards 2.01a b, and c; 2.04; 3.04; 3.06; 4.01; 4.02; and 10.10a relevant to this case? Which other standards might apply?

What are Dr. Matthews’ ethical alternatives for resolving this dilemma? Which alternative best reflects the Ethics Code aspirational principle and enforceable standard, as well as legal standards and Dr. Matthews’ obligations to stakeholders?

What steps should Dr. Matthews take to ethically implement her decision and monitor its effects?
