After reviewing the readings about the Dimensions of Wellness, explain what dimension of your wellness do you feel is the most out of balance? How so?

This week’s course content focuses on the meaning of health and the determinants of health. It is appropriate then, at the start of your program of study, to turn the lens on yourself. Building a better, healthier life is integral to your own well being, as well as to being a role model for others as you work within the health care field.

Throughout this course you will post entries to a health journal. The journal is designed to provide an opportunity for you to personalize course content and consider steps that you can take to improve your own health and well-being. You will submit your summary each week for your Instructor to review.

To begin, select an environmental, occupational, or behavioral change that you would like to make or focus on over the next six weeks.

Write a ½-1 page journal entry that addresses the following:

  • After reviewing the readings about the Dimensions of Wellness, explain what dimension of your wellness do you feel is the most out of balance? How so?
  • Construct a 1-sentence goal statement related to a health behavior that falls within this dimension of wellness or dimensions (if it overlaps).Example: “In order to improve my emotional and physical health, my behavioral goal is to get more sleep by going to bed an hour earlier each night.”
  • What specific steps (2-3) will you take to work toward this health behavior goal by the end of this course?Example: “In order to get an additional hour of sleep each night, I will need to eat earlier in the evening and start my course work earlier. I also have a tendency to procrastinate, which means I don’t start my course work until 8 or 9 at night. I need to eat earlier, start on my home work by 6, and then I can get to bed no later than 10:00 pm.”
  • What are the health benefits to changing this behavior?Example: “By getting more sleep, I’ll have more energy to get through the day, and my mood will likely improve. I think it will improve my emotional health, too, because I’ll be more rested to deal with stressful situations, and I won’t have to panic the night before my assignments are due because I won’t be procrastinating. I may actually do better in my classes, too, because I won’t be trying to write assignments with one eye!”

Examine the implications of ethical, legal, and regulatory policy issues on health care information systems.

Case Study, Stage 4: IT and Legal Considerations for Proposed EHR Technology Solution

Before you begin this assignment, be sure you have read the “UMUC Family Clinic Case Study”, the Case Study Stages 1-3, your required readings and feedback on your graded work so far.

Purpose of this Assignment

This assignment gives you the opportunity to apply the concepts of this course to address the implementation and on-going management of the certified EHR technology solution you have proposed for the UMUC Family Clinic.  This assignment addresses the following course outcomes to enable you to:

  • Evaluate the organizational environment in the health care industry to recognize how technology solutions enable strategic outcomes.
  • Evaluate technology solutions in the health care industry to improve the quality of care, safety, and financial management decisions.
  • Examine the implications of ethical, legal, and regulatory policy issues on health care information systems.

IT, Legal, Ethical and Regulatory Considerations for Proposed EHR Technology Solution

Following your report of the Meaningful Use reporting requirements in your Stage 3 project, the owner of the UMUC Family Clinic has still not authorized the needed project funding.  In evaluating an IT proposal, there are several areas that need to be considered.  Prior to authorizing the needed project funding, the owner has asked you to prepare a table addressing the important aspects/considerations of the project. These considerations are listed in the table provided with this assignment.Considerations include such areas as IT operational safeguard, architectural, project/implementation, legal and ethical considerations.

Depending on the specific EHR technology solution you proposed, some of the considerations would be more important than others, and some may not need specific consideration for the initial implementation of your proposed solution.  (If a consideration is not relevant for the solution as described and at implementation but might be something for the future, mark it “N/A”.  If for instance cloud computing is not in the solution being implemented, but may be considered in the future it would be N/A and not required for the solution.  Please note that even N/A items require an explanation.)

The responses that you enter into the table for each consideration must be aligned to the one specific solution you proposed and appropriate to the UMUC Family Clinic.

Assignment

Using the EHR technology solution you proposed in Stage 2, you should briefly explain it and then copy the table below and complete the remaining two columns.  For each area of consideration, you should rank it as high, medium, low, or N/A (Not Applicable) in importance or relevance at time of implementation (and not some time in the future) for the specific EHR technology solution you proposed for the UMUC Family Clinic.  Then, provide a brief explanation, a minimum of two sentences for each, to justify that ranking or the N/A.  Do not try to create a reason if there is none, but carefully analyze each consideration and determine whether it applies and how.  Explanations must provide enough information to convey the reasoning behind the ranking.  DO NOT copy the definitions from the textbook or other sources but put into your own words to demonstrate your understanding of the concept as you provide your explanation for the ranking.  Use the Grading Rubric to be sure you have covered everything.  Submit your paper with answers to parts 1 and 2 below via your Assignment Folder as a Microsoft Word document with your last name included in the filename.

Part 1: Briefly explain your proposed EHR technology solution.  Identify what the solution is, what it is expected to do for the UMUC Family Clinic, and what major hardware, software and communications components will be used, summarizing the information you provided for Stage 2.

Part 2:  Table of Considerations.  The Areas for consideration are defined in the section “Concepts” which follows the table of considerations.  An example for one entry is also provided below.  Click on the upper left corner of the table to copy it into your paper.

Research and add a consideration from your knowledge of the course

Concepts:

For the 19 considerations covered in the above table, explanations can be found in the following readings:

  • Operational, Security and Architectural Safeguards – Ch. 27 & 28 & 29
  • Ethical and Legal consideration – Ch. 3 & 13 (Week 7 readings)

For consideration #20, it is up to you to add a consideration that you feel is important, and that was not covered in the 19 considerations listed in the table.  It is expected that you may do some external research, if you can’t find an additional consideration through your course readings. This is part of the assignment and is not additional credit.

Example from another industry:  For example, for a fitness center that is adopting a new technology solution involving a kiosk for customers to use to pay for their membership at the gym, then for the Area of Accessibility, the following might be entered.  (The definition of Accessibility is provided here for clarification.  Definitions are not required to be entered into the table above.)  Note the thorough explanation of the ranking.
AreaHigh/Medium/Low Importance or Relevance or Not Applicable (N/A)Explanation for Ranking
Accessibility“Accessibility is the degree to which a product, device, service, or environment is available to as many people as possible.”(Wikipedia.com)MediumSince the customers will use the kiosk to pay their membership fees, it must be accessible to everyone.  Customers need a convenient and individual method of logging into the system that enables them to perform the needed tasks quickly and efficiently.  The customers should have controlled access that prohibits them from entering any areas or performing any functions not intended for customer use. It is ranked “Medium” because it is important for some customers who choose to use the kiosk and the system cannot be accessed without some type of login so it is important; however, it is not “High” since there are other methods of paying membership fees.

The “right” and “wrong” answers have to do with whether or not you correctly ranked each consideration as it relates to your proposed EHR technology solution and have provided a well-supported explanation for the ranking you assigned.  Your responses will be evaluated on whether they are applicable to the solution, correctly ranked, adequately explained, and are appropriate to the UMUC Family Clinic.  Use the Rubric below to be sure you have covered all aspects.

Some Hints for Effective Writing

  1. Prepare to write. Think your position through carefully. Ask yourself: What do I really want to say or to accomplish in this essay?
  2. Help the reader understand your position. Rely on simple phrases and sentences and avoid “high style” expressions. Do not assume that your reader knows more than you.

III. Try to organize your essay in a logical way. If you are presenting an argument, your main point should be the conclusion and the rest of the essay should provide sufficient support for that conclusion. Eliminate pointless introductions and conclusions.

  1. Rewrite. Try to finish your essay at least a day before the deadline. Read your essay the next day and you will be surprised by the number of things you would like to change.
  2. Do not simply reiterate what you have read. Try to demonstrate that you have comprehended the main issues and ideas.
  3. Try to understand the essence of the assignment and concentrate on it.

VII. Identify your sources at the end of your essay. Include: author, title, publisher, edition, and year of publication.

VIII. Any form of plagiarism will automatically result in a failing grade.

Printed Outline (optional)

Outlines for the  paper should include the following parts:

  1. Statement of the topic and the goal of the paper. If you are going to defend a point, try to formulate it as a thesis.
  2. Description of the problem addressed.

Elements of a Risk Management Program

Elements of a Risk Management Program

Jacqueline Drummond

Grand Canyon University: Elements of Risk Management Program

November 30th, 2

Steps for Presenting a Risk Management Program to New Employees

The first step in the presentation of a risk management program to new employees will be taking them through the organizational structure. A thorough understanding of the hierarchies in the organization, the communication channels and escalation policies and other characteristics will be a necessary pre-requisite to new employees understanding the risk management program of a health care organization.

The functions of every position will be explained to the new employees. This will enable the new employees have an understanding of the role that each function plays in the risk management program. An understanding of the functions of all positions in the organization will give the new employees knowledge of risk exposure of various departments and the policies in place that the organization has in place to reduce risk exposure (Kavaler, 2012).

The risk management program of the organization will then be explained to the new employees. This will involve an in-depth analysis of the program and a discussion of the efforts that the organization is taking to identify risk, manage risk, mitigate risk and transfer risk. Hypothetical situations will be used to discuss the policy of the organization as regards risk management, and through such hypothesis, the presentation should give the employees and good understanding of the risk management program of the health institution. The risk management program of our organization involves four major categories. It seeks to ensure that the organization avoids risk by having in place policies geared towards ensuring that chances of losses are prevented. Mitigation of risk seeks to ensure that in case of occurrence, the impact of the risks on the organization and other parties are reduced through implementation of set out policies. Acceptance of risks is another part of risk management plan of the organization; and it seeks to reduce the adverse impact that the organization would suffer through policies of budgeting and insurance. Transfer of risks is the last part of the risk management program. It seeks to transfer liability in case of occurrence of risky events through transfer of such risks to third parties, especially through insurance (O’Brien, 2002).

The roles and functions that the new employees will be playing will then be brought under discussion. This will be in relation to the role that they will need to play in the risk management program of the organization. It is important that before the new employees take up their positions in the organization, they have a thorough understanding of the risk management plan of the organization so that it guides their day to day functions (Hubbard, 2009).

Compliance with the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management

The risk management program of the organization is compliant with the requirements of the American Society of Healthcare Risk management. It has instituted policies that are in accordance with the proposals that are set out, and has in place the human resources that are necessary to ensure that risk is well managed in the organization. The organization has also made patient safety the cornerstone of its risk management program, and this is in compliance with the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management proposals. The organization has made efforts to identify risks and transfer them so that it limits its exposure by taking up insurance covers. Policies in the organization regarding patient safety are also in compliance. The organization has a well trained risk manager, and conducts periodic training for staff to capacity build them on new policies regarding the risk management program of the organization. This is also in compliance with the proposals set out by the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management (Hubbard, 2009).

Recommendations for Inclusion in the Program

Changes need to be carried out in the processing of claims against the organization. More resources, financial and human, need to be allocated to the risk manager’s department so that claims can be resolved in the shortest time possible. This is very important since for a health care facility, reputation is a key aspect of the business, and any delays in the process of handling claims may cause irreparable dent on the reputation of the organization.

Change also needs to be instituted in the evaluation of the risks that are facing the health care organization. Though this falls under the responsibility of the risk manager, it is important to ensure that the health care organization has in its work force actuaries who can evaluate the risk exposure of the organization in the most accurate manner. This will go a long way in ensuring that the resources of the organization are well protected and used in the most optimal manner.

The administrative process

The administrative process is the actual policies that an organization has in place for mitigating risk. The first administrative process for any health care facility is the employment of a risk manager. A risk manager will be responsible for developing policies, in consultation with other stakeholders in the organization, for loss prevention and reduction. A risk manager will also be responsible for handling other administrative issues that are related to risk management such as risk financing, patient safety and seeking and ensuring regulatory and accreditation compliance of the health care institution (Kunreuther, 2002). A risk manager will, also in consultation with other stakeholders, develop policies for risk management program, lead the institution of changes in practice and policy of other departs to align with the risk management plans. In the environment of a health institution, the risk manager will guide medical staff behavior and conduct so as to mitigate any risk that may arise from such. A risk manager in a health organization is not involved directly with patient care but plays an active role in providing support to patients to ensure their safety (Kunreuther, 2002). In case of emergencies or when the risk management plan has been breached, or a risk occurs, the risk manager usually the point of contact to explain the events and the efforts that the health care organization is taking to limit the effect of such an occurrence. The risk manager is also responsible for handling claims that are made against the organization, and he has a duty to ensure that these claims are true (Kunreuther, 2002).

In the administrative process is the management of the health care facility, particularly, the directors of the facility to whom the risk manager report to. These individual have an important role to play in the development of the risk policies of the organization. Medical staff and other employees also participate in the administrative process of risk management. This is because these are the people who directly interact with patients and provide patient care. These are the individuals who are most exposed to risk and therefore need to be well appraised of the administrative procedures that need to be followed in case of an occurrence of a risky event (Kunreuther, 2002).
