Research three types of media, either electronic or print, that depict an older adult.

Perspectives of Aging Reflection

There are many stereotypes about the elderly, and we see older adults portrayed on television, in movies, and in advertisements. We read about older adults in books, hear about them in jokes, and see how they are depicted in birthday cards. Much of what we know, or think we may know, comes from these sources, and they may not be entirely accurate.

Research three types of media, either electronic or print, that depict an older adult. You may look at television, movies, greeting cards, or newspapers as a few examples.Look for stereotypes in the media and how the older adult is portrayed.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word reflection on your findings.

Include an explanation of ageism and how misconceptions and misinformation play a role in it.

Format your assignment according to APA guidelines.

Investigate the expression of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) in bacterial cell.

The overall goal of these experiments is to investigate the expression of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) in bacterial cell. In other words, indicating the insertion of GFP into the target lepA/EF-4 to create a functional fusion protein.

Title

Intro/background: What GFP is? he jellyfish green fluorescent protein (GFP) can be inserted into the middle of another protein to produce a functional, fluorescent fusion protein… Why GFP? GFP was the first intrinsically fluorescent protein discovered and the first shown to be useful as a fluorescent marker for analysis of cell structure and function… What lepA/EF-4 ? All living systems employ mRNA to convert genetic information (stored in nucleic acid polymers) into the functional forms of genes (expressed usually as polymers of amino acids). The process of converting mRNA into protein is known as protein synthesis, or translation; and it is one of the most highly conserved processes that living cells carry out. Protein synthesis requires ribosomes, many protein factors, and occurs in three stages; initiation, elongation, and termination… Initially the target plasmid (pPEM109) containing the lepA gene will be isolated and donor transposon DNA will be synthesized. After characterizing these pieces of DNA, they will be combined with Tn5 transposes. Also, include the a brief overview about what we did in lab taking this info from the material/method file below.

Explain how you know whether this trait is dominant or recessive.

Consider a phenotypic trait you have, such as blue eyes or brown hair, and respond to the following:

  • Is it a dominant or recessive genetic trait?
  • Explain how you know whether this trait is dominant or recessive.
  • Use what you have learned about dominant and recessive alleles to support your response.
  • Provide a scenario that might cause a recessive trait to be beneficial or even more common than a dominant trait.
  • How could this scenario affect the population that exhibits this genetic trait?

_______________________________________________________

  • Describe three uses of genetic engineering.
  • Which of these three do you believe is most important? Why?
  • How have recent legislative bodies and/or interest groups attempted to restrain or curtail certain applications of genetic engineering?
  • What arguments do they make against the use of genetic engineering?
  • Do you agree with any of these arguments? Why or why not?

Discussion Board 4: Genetic Engineering

In the past 25 years, we have learned a lot about DNA, and are now able to manipulate genes.  Plants are genetically modified to possess desirable traits such as resistance to disease and to grow with less water and fertilizer.  There are even certain Idaho potatoes that all grow to the same size, so McDonald’s french fries are the same length!  Human genes are inserted into bacteria to inexpensively produce drugs that treat diseases.  Soon, non-life threatening cosmetic changes will be available for those who can afford them.

Conduct an internet search to find an interesting example of genetic engineering.  Then, summarize what you discovered in about 200 words. Do not copy and paste or plagiarize in any way. Post your initial comment at least 24 hours prior to the assignment due date.  Next, return to the discussion and read the posts of your other classmates. Respond to at least one other student’s findings with about 50 words. Make sure to address them by their first name and then sign your response with your own first name. Check the course schedule for the assignment due date. This discussion board is worth five points.
