What are the different nuances of meaning associated with the expressions brain damage and central nervous system impairment?

Edward is a seven-year-old boy who has difficulty reading. His teacher refers him to the school psychologist to evaluate for a learning disability. The psychologist’s report concludes that Edward has dyslexia and mild central nervous system impairment.

Edward’s mother asks if the report means that her son has brain damage. The psychologist says, “He has impairments, but I wouldn’t say that he is brain-damaged.”

How would you explain this answer? What is dyslexia?

What are the different nuances of meaning associated with the expressions brain damage and central nervous system impairment?

Are we overly sensitive and fearful about the idea of brain damage in our culture?

Is this fear justified?

Identify some of the significant challenges you believe you might face when it comes to suggesting and seeing innovations through in the organizations in which you are or may be involved?

For this assignment, you will continue to reflect on what it takes to create “innovation architecture” to support a culture of innovation within organizations. As part of the assignment, you will conduct an interview with a local business owner or leader or member of a management team to learn more about the techniques organizations utilize (or fail to utilize) to encourage and support the implementation of innovations.

Select your interview candidate and contact the person to set up an appointment. Try to schedule your interview well in advance of the assignment’s due date. You may conduct your interview in person or via phone. You should present the consent letter attached in the Module materials to the person you intend to interview.

Prepare a list of at least 5-7 questions for your interview. Your questions should focus on specific processes within organizations for encouraging and implementing innovations and challenges organizations face in when trying to innovate.

After you complete the interview, write a 1,000-word reflection on what you learned in the interview and how your understanding of the importance of effective innovation architecture has developed or changed. Address the following in your response:

What are the most valuable things you learned about effective innovation architecture?
Identify some of the significant challenges you believe you might face when it comes to suggesting and seeing innovations through in the organizations in which you are or may be involved?
How might you apply what you learned in your interview and about innovation architecture in general to help foster a culture of innovation within your own organization?
Cite two additional reputable secondary sources on innovation architecture or on creating a culture of innovation in your reflection.

Provide an interview summary at the end of your reflection that includes the following information:

The name of the person you interviewed and number of years he/she has been a manager.
The name of the company at which he/she is currently employed.
How long the person has been a manager at the current company.
Date of the interview and whether it took place in person or via phone.
Contact information for the person you interviewed.
The list of your interview questions.
Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide,. An abstract is/is not required

Do a little research of your own and, using your understanding of nervous tissue and the CNS, tell us why you think sleep patterns have such dramatic effects upon cognitive functions.

As most of you may have already suspected, the results of several recent studies have indicated a relationship to sleep with cognitive functions in humans such as reported in this article in a recent issue of US News and World report: Poor Sleep May Age Your Brain. Furthermore, it appears that both too little sleep or too much sleep may be linked to CNS disease states.

Do a little research of your own and, using your understanding of nervous tissue and the CNS, tell us why you think sleep patterns have such dramatic effects upon cognitive functions. Be sure to include a citation for any sources outside your textbook that you use.

Alterations of Pulmonary Function

Chapter 35: Alterations of Pulmonary Function

Case Study

Marjorie Taylor, age 62, comes to the emergency department with mild respiratory distress, increasing dyspnea, orthopnea, bilateral ankle edema, and sudden weight gain. She states that she has had severe hypertension for many years, and that she has been unable to afford her antihypertensive medication for the past several months.

Answer the questions in the activity below to explore the pathophysiology of Ms. Taylor’s condition.

1. What assessment questions should you ask Ms. Taylor about her hypertension?

2. Why should you ask her if she has had any recent episodes of chest pain or any history of angina or heart attack?

3. Why is it important to determine if Ms. Taylor has fainted or if she has a diminished urine output?

4. Why should you listen to Ms. Taylor’s lungs?

5. Echocardiography leads to a diagnosis of systolic CHF. What is systolic heart failure?

6. Given her diagnosis of systolic heart failure, would you expect her ejection fraction to be normal, decreased, or increased? Explain your answer.

7. Does Ms. Taylor have left, right, or biventricular failure? Explain your answer.

8. Ms. Taylor wants to know why she is so short of breath. How should you respond?

9. Ms. Taylor says, “They said that I have heart failure. Is that a heart attack?” How should you respond?
