Note on Primary Assignments:
Each week you will submit a Primary Assignment. In many weeks, you can choose between two options for this assignment. Before you opt for which assignment option to answer, you will want to consider which option affords you the best opportunity to demonstrate learning based upon the assigned course materials. All Primary Assignments include a thesis statement, a bibliography (APA style), and the use and citation of three assigned reading articles from the current week and one assigned reading article from a previous week.

The Balance of Power in American Government
Learning Objective: Through intensive critical thinking and analysis of Articles I, I, and III of the U.S. Constitution, students learn how the balance of powers works in a republican form of government.

For this assignment, research any one of the topics listed below. Notice the conflicting interests of the parties involved in the issue. Do the mechanisms designed to balance the power of government between institutions and individuals continue to work? Has one center of power grown too powerful? Are individual rights being protected during these disputes? Include a discussion of the balancing mechanisms found in the U.S. Constitution and discussed in Federalist Papers 10, 47, and 51.

Writing Assignment OPTION 1:

Choose TWO visual artists that were BORN after January 1, 1900, from your book and answer the six questions below for each artist.

PLEASE NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT BOTH ARTISTS AT THE SAME TIME!

CRITERIA:

  • INELIGIBLE artists include Filmmakers (including animators), performance artists, actors, graphic designers, craft artists, and architects. Artist works should be in visual media such as painting, sculpture, mixed media, installation, drawing
  • Ineligible websites: Wikipedia.org, artsy.net, artcyclopedia.com… (or any other “general” art site or any site that is a “sale site”).
  • Artists that work as a team count as a single artist.
  • For each artist: Number, copy, and answer each of the SIX questions and then answer each question individually (rewrite the question and then answer the question).
  • Points will be deducted for missing or incomplete responses.
  • Follow the Question and Answer format.
  • Assignments submitted in the improper format WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY CREDIT.
  • NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR INELIGIBLE ARTISTS OR ARTISTS BORN PRIOR TO 1900.

QUESTIONS:

  2. The complete website where you found information about the artist. This website must be an “informational” site that is specific to your artist. (1 pt)
  3. What is his/her primary media? (1 pt)
  4. List TWO locations where the artist’s work is currently displayed or was recently displayed. Be specific. (2 pts)
  5. Write a short paragraph about why this artist interests you. Your response must be at least 60 words for full credit. (2 pts)
  6. On the Internet, locate one piece of the artist’s work that is not found in Introduction to Art. ThenIN YOUR OWN WORDSfully describe its media (form/materials) and content (meaning/story). Include the full website where you found the piece. Your response must be at least 60 words for full credit. (3 pts)

PART 2: SHORT ESSAYS 10 pts (5 pts per topic)

Points will be deducted for incorrect grammar and spelling.

CRITERIA:

  • Select TWO questions/topics from the list below.
  • Write your response in essay format.
  • Your response to each question/topic must be more than 200 words for full credit.
  • Please rewrite the question/topic to which you are responding.

QUESTIONS:

  • Define symbolism and iconography and describe the difference between them.
  • Discuss two different structures built for religious use. Explain how the form is related to purposes and how the form is used by that religious group. Be specific about how it meets particular rituals or other needs of the group.
  • Describe why and how art and artists have been considered to have exceptional power in some cultures.
  • Describe how rulers have used images of themselves to enhance their authority. Cite examples.
  • Explain why images of defeated rulers, dead rulers, or monuments of an occupied culture might be defaced or destroyed.
  • Describe the use of tribal masks for rituals in different cultures.
  • Select two ethically controversial works of art from different periods in history. Explain how each work was received at the time it was made and how changes in societal values have impacted acceptance of the works today.
  • Why is it important that news photographs not be altered?

Discussion post response

Scroll through the numerous video topics (Ill send you 3-4) . Perform light research on the topics. Browse through the various topics; use the internet, Google Scholar and see what you find. Next, begin to narrow your choice of topic down to three. Ultimately from these three topics, you will choose one topic.  Once you choose that one topic, go to (Blank) library to research specific information about your it.  Afterwards, post your response to the questions below on the “Discussion” board.  Make certain to use proper grammar.  Do not abbreviate. Use complete sentences. At the end of your discussion, cite your sources from your research, using the APA format. 
Below is the sequence to follow as you post on Blackboard. 
1. Give the name of each topic.
2. Based on your research, write two paragraphs about what you have found interesting about each of the three topics. What makes each topic interesting?
3. Now give the name of the single topic you have chosen. In other words, which topic do you choose to explore, for the rest of the semester, to create a speech? Why have you chosen this topic?  Why should your audience be interested in this topic?

Religion Journal

 

Journal Instructions:

For each of the eight journal entries, write an essay/discussion of at least 250 words (the best entries are usually longer) based on your interpretation of a religion studied. This journal post is not a discussion of the whole religion in general; it is an opportunity to follow your interest or concern on any SPECIFIC subject that pertains to a particular religion. You have freedom to choose your topic, as long as you do it thoughtfully, using precise details, terms, examples from the text. Remember that, in religious studies, “God is in the details.” Do not just generalize but show that you read the specific details of the lesson chapter.

If you are at a loss for a topic, here is a suggested format for your journal entry: In three separate paragraphs, discuss (1) what you find most essential to define that religion; (2) what you find most intriguing about that religion; (3) what for you, personally, feel is most concerning or problematic about that religion. Be respectful, but sincere.
