Choose a poem you enjoy but perhaps do not completely “get.” Copy the poem on a sheet of paper, skipping three blank lines in between each line of the poem. That’s your scaffold. In a written essay, explain how you view the world, particularly as it relates to social expectations and/or norms. I recommend focusing on a specific social expectation – as it relates to age, gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity— otherwise the paper might not have focus. Push yourself to say something beyond “some gender-based norms are bad.” Remember, Amy Tan essentially said that tests are biased. You’re trying to help readers understand how you perceive the world, so specific scenes and experiences are important to include in the paper. Consider style, tone and symbolism to engage the audience. Most of this paper is about showing readers what you believe through experience. I recommend doing what Bleyaert does: tell readers your essay’s purpose in the conclusion.
