The aim of these papers is to demonstrate an understanding of the themes discussed in class along with critical analysis of how the films we watch reflect complex ethical, social, cultural, and political realities. If you miss class when we watch a film for one of the CFRs, it is your responsibility to watch the film on your own. Critical Film Review Papers should consider the following: • Your personal viewing experience of a film. What was your reaction to the film? What did you like or not like about it? What was especially impressive/ meaningful/ surprising/ annoying/difficult/enjoyable to you about the film? The vision or stance regarding the social, cultural, or political issue the filmmaker represents and the major preoccupations of the work regarding character, situation and social realities. What are the issues examined in the film? What does the film say about that issue? How do the characters represent or embody social or political actors? • Analysis of how the insights of the film apply to “real life” situations and how these insights might suggest a different course of action for the culture being portrayed. It is important to bear in mind that the filmmakers are not making polemical films. Their works reflect particular realities in more subtle forms. In viewing and interpreting these materials, be aware that your analysis must be based on a thoughtful understanding and examination of the film. Various interpretations are valid. I’m looking for the paper to reflect your thoughts on how an artistic work suggests new ways of looking at individuals, groups, and cultures and the problems they face. No plot summaries, please.
