Music History & Appreciation

You will
listen to three works of music:

1. La campanella (little bell in Italian), the third of six etudes taken from the
Six Grand Etudes of Paganini, composed in 1851, by Franz Liszt (1811-
1886). An etude is a technical study for a given instrument, in this case
the piano. The purpose of an etude is to develop technical mastery on a
given instrument. What separates an etude from other technical exercises
such as scales, is that an etude is so exquisitely written it can be
performed as a polished work of music in a public recital.
Nicolai Paganini (1782-1840) was an Italian virtuoso violinist. Liszt
transcribed some of Paganinis solo violin etudes for the piano. This one
is considered to be one of the most difficult works ever written for the
piano.

2. The third movement from Ludwig van Beethovens (1770-1827)
Sonata no. 23 in F minor Appassionata (Italian for passionate), Op. 57
(op. is an abbreviation for the Latin term opus which means work.
This term is used to categorize composers catalogue of compositions).
This work derives from Beethovens middle period and is considered to
be one of his most challenging piano works of music.

3. Old Badman (2011) for electric cello, was composed by Arthur
Hernandez (b. 1961) and was commissioned by the cellist Jeffrey
Krieger, who is principal cellist for the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.
Here are the program notes for this work:
Old Badman was commissioned by the e-cellist Jeffrey Krieger in 2008.
This commission coincided with the passing of the American composer
Donald Erb (1927-2008). Erb was a great teacher, mentor and friend to
Arthur Hernandez, and had composed the work, Suddenly, Its Evening,
for Krieger in 1997. Both Hernandez and Krieger decided that it would
be appropriate that this new commissioned work be dedicated to the
enduring memory of Donald Erb. The title, Old Badman comes from
the last movement of Erbs last large orchestral work, Evensong (1993).
Old Badman is an American folk legend that Erb humorously adopted as
a moniker for himself due to the iconoclastic reputation that he had
developed over his music career. Old Badman (2011) begins with a direct
quote from the opening motive of the first movement of Evensong,
followed by a passage of music that, if not a direct quote, is certainly a
familiar passage in the later music of Donald Erb. From there, Hernandez
takes this material and creates a uniquely original work of music. Old
Badman is a single-movement work that lasts approximately ten and a
half minutes in duration.

You are to listen to all three works and compose an essay on each work
(all three works must be written about) describing the
characteristics and qualities of each one. Please include some of the
following topics:
The period of the work
The genre of the work
Different music textures heard in the work
Form(s) of the work
Musical language consonant? Dissonant? A combination?
Is this work absolute or programmatic music? Please explain.
Is this work traditional? Experimental? Both?
What did you like most about the work? Why?
What did you like least about the work? Why?

Introduction to Privacy and Security

Daisha Estrada is in the clinic today. While you are escorting your patient, an 85-year-old woman, out to the waiting room you and the patient overhear the lab tech and another nurse talking about Daishas lab results. They are discussing her vaginal smear coming back positive for gonorrhea. As you are escorting the elderly woman out to the waiting room she asks if gonorrhea is contagious. Those two ladies in the hall were talking about having to report that womans lab result to the CDC. Wouldnt you only be contacting the CDC if it was seriouscan I get it from being here today?

1.    Go to the following website, www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001929.htm

and read about the purpose of reporting certain diseases and illness to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Explain how the Privacy Rule applies to reporting to the CDC?

2.    Describe what the healthcare workers did wrong in the short scenario provided.

3.    Describe what the healthcare workers should have done differently. What would be the most appropriate action to take when wanting to discuss a patients health status in a place such as the clinic?

4.    What information is protected by Federal Law?

Imagine you are working at a hospital. You find out that one of your friends was admitted to the hospital last night and has had surgery. Although you are not assigned to take care of your friend, she is in the unit that you work, therefore you have access to her medical record. You are in the EHR documenting on your assigned patients and decide to take a quick look at your friends chart to find out why she had surgery and how she is doing. A little later you call a family member to tell them about your friends surgery.

5.    Discuss what was done wrong in this scenario and the possible implications and consequences. Be thorough in writing your answer.

6.    One of the largest problems with healthcare information security has been, and still is, inappropriate access by authorized users. How will the current regulations help reduce or eliminate this particular problem? Provide at least one example in your answer.

EHR Standards

For this assignment, choose a case study that allows you to focus on standards for EHR data and technology, as well as the organizations that set the standards. Be sure to complete all assigned EHR course activities before you complete this assignment, so that you can add perspective from your growing EHR knowledge and skills to your analysis.

Instructions
Choose a case study from one of the links provided; provide the citation in current APA style and format; and give an overview of the case study you chose. Based on your reading of the case study, your experience in using the EHR in the course, and further research in industry or scholarly resources, write your case study analysis to meet the following criteria:

Identify standards that govern EHR systems and the organizations that set them.
Select one vocabulary standard and one classification standard and explain how the case study implemented that standard.
Distinguish types of data, data formats, and data reporting requirements.
Describe the purpose of data modeling and data dictionaries.
Explain how the case study addressed the following components: data architecture, databases, data warehouses, data modeling, data dictionary, and metadata.
Explain the importance of data usability and quality.
Explain the importance of consistency and design.
Determine standards for integration among applications.
Using your experiences with the assigned EHR course activities, identify documentation strategies that have been used. Explain how these strategies have assisted in the integration of data across applications.
