Philosophy Of The Human Person

Philosophy of the human person

Reflection paper guide 5-7 pages

Write a reflection paper on what it means to be a human person. This is not a research paper!!!

Brainstorm:

Be inspired by one of our readings in Man’s Search for Meaning or a phrase from Heidegger or Plato. Explore this idea or text by expanding on our classroom discussions and analysis by thinking more critically. Organize this idea into a reflection on what makes a meaningful life for everyone for the most part and for you as an individual in particular. Add what is meaningful for the individual at end. Note: the passage is simply a point of departure; it isn’t necessary.

Theme: How does a person devise what is meaningful through constraints of all sorts- both tragic and mundane-and choices-both individual and communal? Define, and then formulate the key components or structures that are operative in what is meaningful for all and lastly, what is particular to the author( yourself )

Format: Word doc., one-inch margin, 12-point font, double-spaced, approximately six pages; more important than the length of the paper is that the points below are addressed. If you employ any text in the paper, identify the page of the text with an in-text citation, e.g.( Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning 45, Heidegger, Kant and the Problem with Metaphysics,38, Plato, Apology 17a5) .

Since this reflection paper discusses “ What is meaningful” in general, avoid heavy reliance upon unique personal experiences. In other words, while some personal experience is appropriate, write a reflection that is applicable to most people. Avoid 1st person (“I think that ….”) and 2nd person (“ when you….”) narration, for the focus is on meaningful life.

Paper introduction : 15

· Have an interesting introduction and a clear thesis statement. What is the major point or claim of the paper? E.G. “ This paper will argue that a meaningful life is….”

The definition and components of meaning :25

· Define or describe what “meaning” is. This can be qualified in many ways.

· What comprises meaning? E.g. What makes something meaningful? How is meaning formed? What are its parts? What human skills are operative with meaning-making?

Evidential experience of meaning : 25

· What type of experiences would help to illustrate or give evidence for the previous section?

· Do tragic experiences affect meaning and identity; do joyful experiences affect meaning? What is the relationship between meaning and identity, agency, and ethics?

· To what extent can a personal experience relate to all of us?

Paper conclusion:15

· Does the conclusion of the paper match the thesis statement?

· Does the body of the paper support the thesis statement in the conclusion?

Paper development and composition : 20

· Does the paper develop one idea per paragraph with transitions between paragraphs?

· Are grammar and syntax correct?

Total points –100

Life And Death

conduct research on the United States Supreme Court case of Cruzan v. Director, Missouri Department of Health, 497 U.S. 261 (1990). The full text of this case, along with numerous case briefs, commentaries, summaries, etc., may be found by simply entering the full name of the case into any major online search engine of your choosing. Alternatively, you may use Westlaw, Lexis or any other professional legal research databank in your research, however, use of such is not required. Following your research, review the following questions: • What was the ultimate numerical vote of the court? • When and how can life support be withdrawn? • How does death by refusal of treatment differ from suicide? • How does a living will work and when does it become of legal effect? • What is a health care directive and how does it work? After completing your research, summarize your answers, and, along with any other sources, if any, address and support your particular position/view on the following specific issues, and, specifically, how you would apply the Saint Leo University Core Values of Community, Respect, and Integrity into your actions. Be sure to use proper APA format for citations.

1. What are the potential foreseeable financial, psychological, and medical, yet unintended, harmful consequences to one’s family and friends in failing to provide a properly executed will and living will prior to one’s final illness and death? 2. What are the fundamental distinctions between recuperative medical care and palliative care? Who should be included in the decision to modify care from recuperative to palliative? When, if ever, is the right to refuse any and all medical care appropriate when such virtually ensures the death of the patient? 3. What professionals, medical or otherwise, should be involved in advising decisions concerning end-oflife wishes? How does euthanasia differ from a simple cessation of treatment? Who should make end of life decisions for those who are without a family member to take on such a role? 4. What measures can be taken to ensure the quality of ongoing family and social relationships, individually and as a group, to end-of-life patients? What pitfalls are to be avoided in ensuring maintenance of these relationships? What actions may be taken to ensure the spiritual and existential dimensions of the process are respected and integrated?

The scenario that was chosen was 1.

You are a Human Resources Manager of an expanding technology company consisting of 170 employees that develops and distributes small electronic devices. Over the past two (2) years, a research group formed, designed, and built prototypes of small remote surveillance cameras used for security. Recently, your company won a contract to build and provide these remote surveillance cameras to various government agencies. The contract will begin with your company supplying these cameras to agencies within your home state. If all orders are fulfilled sufficiently, the contract will be expanded to supplying agencies outside of your home state.

For the immediate future, you will need to secure a larger facility and hire more staff to sustain the first part of the contract. This staff will consist of ten (10) Assembly Technicians, one (1) Certified Quality Control Engineer, one (1) Contract Administrator, and one (1) Office Support Paraprofessional. Meanwhile, there is a contract clause requiring that you provide a staffing plan in order to ensure future product deliveries and sustain the possible future growth.
