Language And Meaning(Film Respond)

To enliven your praxis orientation of our study of language and meaning, we will view two films throughout the semester that demonstrate theories, practices, concepts, issues and ideas that emerge in our readings.

• You are expected to write a 5-6 page response to 2 of films of your own choosing.

• Responses must include a clear connection to select theories, practices, concepts, issues and ideas that emerge from our study of language and meaning by incorporating material of your own choosing from the readings and lectures.

• Your first paragraph must work to frame the entire discussion. The framing paragraph will tell the reader what to expect by introducing the theories, practices, concepts, issues and ideas that you intend to connect to the film.

• You will use MLA style for all in-text citations and the Works Cited page.

• For MLA formatting and style guide see: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/

• I suggest watching the films with your classmates. You can make these arrangements via email with your peers or by making an announcement in class.

• Lastly, I am intentionally giving you a lot of time to write the papers. Thus, not being able to find a film is not a valid excuse for late papers. (See me as necessary).

The films in order are the following (please note that I have given you ample time to locate these films):

The Breakfast Club(this is necessary, then you can choose Frozen or The King’s Speech)

Frozen

The King’s Speech

Explain the need for effective project and team communications systems

You and your manager reviewed the change management system you defined for the project. Your manager does not think it is really necessary because “a good project management plan will not have any changes. The scope is set, the dates are set, and the budgets are set. A good project manager will just make sure everything goes according to plan.”

Go to the discussion board and describe how you would respond to your manager’s comments. State whether or not you agree with the statement and why. If you agree, describe how you will make sure that everything goes according to plan. If you don’t agree, write at least one paragraph that describes how you will get your manager to agree with changes when they occur.

In your own words, post a substantive response to the Discussion Board question(s) and comment on other postings. Your response should address the DB question(s) and move the conversation forward. You will be graded on the quality of your postings, including mastery of the concept as well as critical thinking. If asked for your opinion, do not simply state that it is a good or bad idea; elaborate on your reasons and argument. Include enough detail to substantiate your thinking as well as your position on the questions or comments.

Reading Assignment

Shtub, Bard, and Globerson, Chaps. 2.9.1 – 2.9.2 and 12 PMI, review 4.3, 5.5, 6.5, and 7.4, read Chap. 10

  • Explain the need for effective project and team communications systems to keep stakeholders informed of project status.
  • Describe the need to manage project scope throughout a project’s life cycle to provide closure to a properly executed project.

WATERGATE SCANDAL

During the Watergate scandal in 1974, many policy pundits wrote columns demanding that President Richard Nixon resign from the presidency because he was, in their view, clearly culpable for the Watergate break-ins. Not all pundits felt this way, however. Click here and here to read articles that offer differing views of President Nixon at the height of the Watergate scandal.

Complete the following for this assignment:

  • Step 1: Summarize the arguments made in each of the two articles regarding the conduct of President Nixon. How might each of the author’s views impact the reader’s understanding of the Watergate crisis?
  • Step 2: Describe how the Watergate events changed American views toward politics and politicians. In your view, how did these events change the press coverage of politicians?
  • Step 3: Speculate about how the Watergate event coverage might have been different (better or worse) in the age of social media and smartphones. Would it have lasted as long? Why or why not? Are these innovations in technology helpful or harmful to the way that people understand current events?

Human Resource Planning And Organizational Strategy

In a four- to five-page paper (excluding the title and references pages), discuss the relationship between human resource planning activities and the organization’s strategic development and implementation. Describe the eight elements of the staffing process. Examine the relationship between the eight elements of the staffing process and the four activities related to human resource planning.

Based on the information in Chapter 9: Case: Using the Internet to Find the Best Talent, review the human resource planning process and the previous readings from Chapter 6. Explain the relationship between the four activities of human resource planning and the organization’s strategic planning, development, and implementation.

Your paper should include in-text citations and references for at least three scholarly sources, in addition to the text, and be formatted according to APA style

You will complete a written assignment based on this week’s reading.

Again, this week you will write another short paper. Our topic this week is Human Resource Planning and Organizational Strategy. The paper should address organizational processes related specifically to human resource planning — and once again, I would like to see you apply these concepts in the context of your own organization. Your paper should be four to five pages excluding the title page and references.

First, the prompt requires you to discuss the relationship between human resource planning activities and the organization’s strategic development and implementation. This means you need to explain how human resource planning (recruiting, hiring, evaluating, supporting, promoting and firing) relates to the strategic direction of the organization as a whole. How do HR managers support organizational goals through people? See my guidance above on Fitz-enz’s book for some clues.

Next, describe the eight elements of the staffing process. Then, I suggest that you list the four activities related to human resource planning. Derive these from your textbook.

After that, describe the relationship between the eight elements and the four activities. How are they intertwined?

Explain the relationship between the four activities of human resource planning and the organization’s strategic planning, development, and implementation. This means that you need to explain how the four activities and how they affect the organization as a whole. Again, the Fitz-enz book may be helpful to you!

This may seem like a tall order, but if you follow my recommended structure below, you can master this assignment.

  1. APA formatted title page
  2. One strong introductory paragraph with a clear thesis statement
  3. One short paragraph summarizing how you think Human Resource planning relates to the strategic activities of an organization. You’ll explain these in detail later in the paper.
  4. One large paragraphs that briefly lists and explains the eight elements of the staffing process. Cite the textbook for support.
  5. One shorter paragraph that lists and explains the four activities of human resource planning.
  6. One large paragraph, explaining the relationship between the eight elements and the four activities — this is a larger explication of your first short paragraph (#3) that summarized your approach at the beginning of the paper.
  7. One short paragraph that summarizes figure 10.5 in the textbook. What does the diagram describe? Cite the textbook.
  8. One short paragraph that describes how the HR planning process affects the organization as a whole — especially in terms of vision, mission, and values. This is where you might cite the Fitz-enz book, if possible!
  9. One short paragraph about how you’ve seen this relationship play out in your own organization. How has this relationship worked for your organization — or has it worked at all? How might you help affect positive change in this regard?
  10. A strong conclusion paragraph that summarizes your thesis statement and the major points of your paper.
  11. An APA references page
