Prejudice, Stereotypes, and Discrimination

In many cases, prejudice stems from the unknown. As individuals, we tend to migrate toward those who may look like us, act like us, and think like us. As a result, it may be difficult for us to open our minds and embrace those whose values, beliefs, and overall sense of self differ from our own.

For this assignment, compose a paper that is three to four pages in length.  In your paper, discuss the impacts of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination in the context of social psychology.  Be sure to address the following points:

1.   Define and describe the following terms: prejudice, stereotype, discrimination, and ingroup vs. outgroup. Based on your own experiences in the social world, can you relate to any of these terms? Do you identify with a particular term? Why or why not?

2.   Examine the social, cognitive, and societal origins of prejudice and stereotypes. Be sure to include specific information regarding categorization, such as ingroup favoritism and the outgroup homogeneity effect, norms, competition for resources, and social inequalities. Of the categories presented, which do you think are the most significant in our society and in your particular community?

3.   Analyze the influences that promote stereotyping, and offer strategies to reduce prejudice. What are the consequences of stereotyping and discrimination? Who does this behavior hurt, and in what ways does it hurt them? Are we inadvertently creating self-fulfilling prophecies in our society? If so, how can we take steps to improve attitudes, judgments, and behaviors?

Your paper must include an introduction, a thesis statement, and a conclusion. Your completed assignment should be three to four pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), include a minimum of three references, and follow APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Describe how that behaviorist would teach an adult a new skill. Be specific; what is the skill?

Pavlov, Watson, and Skinner are considered the originators of behaviorism. All contributed to learning theory. All three of the researchers studied the effects of the environment on learning.

Select one of the three behaviorists who, in your opinion, offers the most compelling argument for the use of behaviorism when teaching a new subject to an adult and to a child. Identify that behaviorist, then answer the following questions about his approach:

  1. Describe how that behaviorist would teach an adult a new skill. Be specific; what is the skill?
  2. What steps would the behaviorist use?
  3. Would that behaviorist use a different approach with a child?
  4. Why do you think this behaviorist’s approach is best?
  5. What issues or problems do you find in the other two behaviorists’ approaches?

Discuss the main findings and their implications

Based on your review of the most recent, relevant research findings on your chosen topic, submit a final version of your literature review paper, integrating feedback received from your instructor. Be sure to include a research/focal question, synthesis of the literature you reviewed, well-established conclusions, and points of discussion and/or future research.

 

  • Begin the review by defining the objective of the paper. Introduce the reader to your focal question. What is this question intended to address? You may state your “question” in the form of a problem if you like. Describe the topic for your literature review and why you chose this topic. Explain why you think it is important. It is also useful to tell the reader how the review is organized in your introduction section, before you the transition into the body of the review.
  • Organize your literature review paper by themes/theories/concepts, rather than article by article. If there is one major theme you want to highlight, state the theme. If there are three major themes or streams of thought on the topic, briefly name them—and then organize the balance of your literature review around those three streams. Think of themes, theories, concepts, lines of thought, and ideas as organizing strategies for your literature review. Your creativity in this assignment is not the content or findings but the clarity with which you organize the review and create a context for understanding the focal question.
  • When you are done introducing the first line of thought, create a new paragraph to discuss studies which present another line of thought or opposing view.
  • Your literature review should hit the high points of each article. You should not discuss a single article, one by one, like a grocery list. Zero in on the main theme or finding and then move on to the next theme. Remember, this is a synthesis, an integration of all the things you have learned. You are creating a discussion on paper, which in turn gives the reader a context for understanding where the scholarship has been, where it is currently, and where it likely will be heading next. Provide enough details to help the reader understand the significance of the studies you cite without “rebuilding Rome.” Be sure to evaluate the studies and offer critical comments on any shortcomings you’ve observed or that have been reported by the authors.
  • Discuss the main findings and their implications. Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study and contribute to the existing body of knowledge? Complete your review by drawing conclusions about your body of research and identifying gaps in the research which still remain to be explored, maybe even by you! Make an argument as to why your research question is important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic.

Hereditary and Environment: Influence on psychological developments

One of the biggest controversies that behavioral psychologists contend with is the evidence of the existence of a possible link between heredity and environment, and their impact on human psychological developments. Sharp criticisms have emerged on the idea that environmental factors have significant impacts on human psychological functioning and development (Rutter, Pickles, Murray & Eaves, 2001). This problem demands research and revisiting to settle the controversy over whether environmental factors have implications on psychological functioning. Furthermore, many researchers have attempted to explain how peer environment work together with genetic variables to influence human’s social developments. Such researches have mostly confined their scope to adults. However, there exists a dearth in knowledge and literature on how peer environment works together with genetic variables to impact young children and teenagers’ social development.

My knowledge on this area of study touches on five distinctive domains of individual differences in behavior: personality, cognitive abilities, social attitudes, psychopathology, as well as psychological interests. This corresponds with the current position held by researchers on the topic. For instance, according Ehrlich and Kennedy (2005) the aforementioned elements greatly determine the interplay between human psychological differences and environmental impact. Nonetheless, I believe that the research topic will give me the opportunity to expand my understanding of the topic. I would like to extend beyond the basic knowledge on social attitudes, cognitive influences, and personality.

I chose this topic because I am greatly interested in the subject of human development. As a psychologist it will be important for me to have adequate knowledge on the subject and understand the factors that influence development. I believe that study on the interplay between heredity and environment will expand my understanding of the various problems experienced by humans as they develop from one stage to another. The other reason why I chose this topic is that I have always longed for a platform and an opportunity to contribute to knowledge and understanding in the field of psychology. Attachment Styles

We have learned that attachment occurs due to safety needs, but what if these needs were not met? In this discussion, you will consider attachment styles and potential outcomes when conditions are not ideal for attachment, as well as the interaction between attachment styles and temperament.

Kandi is an 11-year-old girl who has lived in Centervale with a foster family, the Jacksons, for one month. She has been in foster care most of her life, having been removed from her biological parents’ care at the age of 10 months. Kandi’s parents were addicted to drugs and alcohol and Kandi spent most of her infancy in her crib or playpen, alone in her room. It is likely that Kandi was exposed to drugs and alcohol in utero. It is unknown whether, in addition to neglect, she was abused sexually or physically. These are possibilities given her parents’ addictions and presence of multiple adults in her house at any given time.

Since Kandi’s arrival, her foster parents have noted several behaviors that seem odd. Despite her sweet personality, Kandi loses her temper easily. She hugs people indiscriminately, while at the same time pushing others away. At times, Kandi avoids her foster mother or seems unconcerned with her not being in the room. At other times, she becomes very distraught and cries frantically when her foster mother goes to the laundry room. She has a difficult time interacting socially with the other children at Centervale Elementary and has only a few friends. At the same time, she clings to her teacher, constantly hugging her, and even trying to kiss her. Although she has been provided with toys, books, and games, Kandi collects odd things such as used staples or the rubber pieces left over from pencils.

Based on your analysis of the scenario, respond to the following:

  • How would you explain the various attachment styles identified based on the work of Bowlby and Ainsworth?
  • Why is it important to understand attachment styles?
  • What disruptions in attachment might be inferred from Kandi’s behavior?
