Parenting Practices Over Generations

You learned in your readings that parenting practices and techniques used to shape child development are influenced by many factors including culture, socioeconomic status, non-normative life events, and cohort effects. To understand cohort effects, consider that the experiences of a child growing up in the 1940s are different in many ways from a child growing up today.

Read the article: Kotchick, B.A. & Forehand, R. (2002). Putting parenting in perspective: A discussion of the contextual factors that shape parenting practices. Journal of Child and Family Studies, 11(3), 255-269.

Synthesize what you learned in your readings as well as the above article to address the following:

  • Using the chart/table below, list at least 4 parenting practices of 3 generations. You can describe parenting practices of 3 generations of your family members, another family you interview, or general practices of generations based on research you find. For example, how did each generation address issues such as education, extracurricular activities, breastfeeding, sleeping arrangements, religious involvement, etc.? Include brief demographic information (e.g., sex, age, region of the country) Note: 3 different generations means 3 different time periods, not 3 different people.
  • Now review the chart/table and discuss the following:
    • How were the parenting practices similar and different between generations?
    • Explain the concept of cohort effects. What cohort effects (e.g. historical or social events) might have influenced the parenting practices of each generation you described?
    • Identify and explain contextual factors (other than cohort effects) described by Kotchick and Forehand (2002) that might have influenced the parenting practices of each generation you described.
    • Why is it important to understand contextual factors, including cohort effects, when researching differences in parenting practices?

Assignment 3 Grading Criteria
Maximum Points
Presented relevant and important data on at least 4 parenting practices

Analyze the role that family structure, expectations, parenting styles, and involvement of caregivers played in your development.

Assignment 2: Family Dynamics

Family dynamics play a major role in how children develop. These influences include structure, expectations, parenting styles, and involvement. To understand more about how childhood experiences with your family have influenced current identification of self, take a few minutes and think back to those days.

  • Analyze the role that family structure, expectations, parenting styles, and involvement of caregivers played in your development.
  • Reflect on your experiences and share any that you are comfortable sharing. You can use questions such as the following to guide your reflection:
    • What was the best thing that your family said about you or did for you? Try to remember one exact day when that was said or done for you. Which person did this? Remember now what you felt then. When do you feel this way now?
    • Did you have a nickname? How did you feel about it?
    • Did family members tell you what you would end up being or doing? Was it what you wanted to be or do? How did you respond?
    • How do you think your family would have described you to a close friend of theirs? What were they most concerned about for you?
  • Would you do or react to things differently now than you did then? Why?
  • Make sure you evaluate your experiences in the context of major theories and concepts of cognitive, social, and physical development during middle childhood. Support your responses by citing information from the online notes and textbook and other scholarly sources. For example, describe the cognitive stage you might have been in at the time of specific events, according to Piaget, Erikson, or Freud. How did this influence how you interpreted the events?  You can also discuss the parenting style that you think was used by your parents/caregivers.

Carl Rogers – Psychology

Please read carefully:

Discussion Rogerian Therapy Write response in 4–5 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Similar to Freud, Carl Rogers developed his theory from his extensive work with his patients. However, unlike Freud, he believed that people are typically healthy; being mentally healthy is the normal state. Although there are unhealthy people, they are not the norm or what one has to accept and live with throughout one’s life. Furthermore, Rogers believed that each person has one primary motivation—to realize his/her full potential or to be self-actualized. Finally, he posited that neurosis stems from incongruence between one’s real self and one’s ideal self. He applied this to his theory of counseling in the development of three therapeutic criteria that he felt were both necessary and sufficient to help the patient. These three qualities are now the foundation for modern person-centered therapy.

The three qualities that form the foundation of Rogerian therapy are empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard. These will be relatively easy to express for people you naturally like but can be difficult to express for people whom you do not like nor agree with.

Imagine that you are a psychologist working with a population of individuals that tend to be more difficult to work with, such as sex offenders, elderly patients with dementia, or mentally challenged children. Use the Internet, Argosy University library resources, and your textbook to research the concepts of Rogerian therapy and respond to the following questions:

First, realistically, do you think it is possible to be congruent and to extend empathy and unconditional positive regard to these clients in a psychotherapeutic context? Why or why not?

Second, how do you think clinicians practicing Rogerian therapy would approach these concepts for these clients?

Third, how might Rogerian therapy be a helpful strategy for these clients?

Last, is it possible these concepts of Rogerian therapy could hinder treatment?

Write response in 4–5 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Again, All Original Content! Due Friday August 23rd, 2013.
