Physical Development Across The Lifespan-

The discussion this week focuses on ageism. You will need to consult with 3 older adults (preferably someone between ages 35-50, another between ages 51-65, and another who is 66+), such as your parents, grandparents, relatives, or neighbors. Collect the information and then put it in essay format.
First, ask yourself, and then ask the people you are interviewing, the following questions:

  1. What age is middle age? Why do you think this is the case? What are the typical physical signs of aging in middle age?
  2. What is old age? Why do you think this is the case? What are the typical physical signs of aging in old age?
  3. Are societal attitudes for attractiveness and fitness the same or different for people aged 20 versus 30  versus 40  versus 50 years? Be sure to state what the standards of beauty are, and whether they are the same/different for each of these groups and for men and women. Also, ask each person who is their ideal of beauty and why (i.e., get a name and age; usually people select movie stars)?

Second, for the interviewees, ask if the person has been exposed to societal attitudes because of his/her age AND what, if any, physical changes the person has noticed in his/her physical health and endurance.

Emotional Development Across The Lifespan- 4 To 5 Paragraphs

Peers exert a powerful influence on children’s self-esteem. During the school years, children begin to compare themselves with their peers when evaluating their competencies. Children also have very specific dress and behavioral codes that contribute to who is popular or accepted (i.e., “in group”) and who is not (i.e., “out group”).

Discuss your own childhood experiences with regard to this in-out group acceptance/rejection issue, in terms of the emotional consequences for you. Address the following questions/topics:

  1. How did your parents handle this situation?
  2. How would/do you handle this situation as parents?
  3. That is, what are you willing to do to help your child be accepted by peers (e.g., not kiss the child in front of other children, or buy “cool” clothes regardless of cost)? Be sure to specify at least two adjustments you are willing to make and two you are not willing to make.
  4. Explain why you believe this is the right decision and how it will help your child.

Discussion Question

Women have a long history of being considered inferior to men. However, during the middle to the late 20th century, the women’s rights movement began to improve the plight of women in Western society by granting them access to societal positions previously held only by men.

Some people claim that women have finally achieved equality with men in the 21st century; others are not convinced.

How will you describe the status of equality between men and women in contemporary Western culture?

Do you see any major areas where women are still discriminated against on a large scale? If so, give at least two examples. If not, rationalize your views.

Different persons respond differently to the same situation

There are six ways in which a person and the situation interact to shape a person’s goals, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

These are:

1. Different persons respond differently to the same situation.

2. Situations choose the person.

3. Persons choose the situation.

4. Different situations can prime different parts of the person.

5. Persons change the situation.

6. Situations change the person.

As part of your answer:

·         Discuss what is meant by each of these dyads.

·         Provide an example of how each one works.

·         Assume you are a supervisor. How would you work within each of these situations with your employees to increase employee motivation? How would your decisions be affected by each person-situation dyad?

·         Assume that you are an industrial/organizational consultant brought into the same office as asked to study these person-situation interactions in order to advise management how to best put them to use to increase employee motivation which research design would you use? Why is this design the best fit for this office situation?
