Describe the different ways in which an independent variable can be manipulated.

After reading Chapter 5 in the course text compare and contrast the similarities and differences between experimental and quasi-experimental designs. Describe the different ways in which an independent variable can be manipulated. Demonstrate application of the scientific method and ethical principles by explaining what dictates the selection of design (experimental versus quasi-experimental) and the type of manipulation used in a research study. Finally, give an example of a situation that could be studied with an experiment or quasi-experiment and assess the appropriateness of one design over the other in light of practical and ethical concerns.

Introduction
Throughout history religion has served as a driving force to build political influences within a country and unity amongst its people. Religious origins in America began with the Puritans who came to escape religious oppression. Soon after many groups followed to practice faith and escape religious persecution. Although the United States was founded without a sacred center, religious liberty became an American value.

After watching this week’s video review, reflect upon the religion as a social organization within society. For your initial post, address the following:

  • In the video Dialogue: Religion and Society, Professors Brent Peterson and Ronald Scott share their perspective to a recent Pew Center Study of religion in American society.
  • According to the 2009 Pew Center Study two thirds of Americans say religion is losing its influence on American life and attitudinal changes to religion have a direct impact in societal views pertaining to social issues such as immigration, environment, and poverty. In your opinion, is religion as a social institution tied to issues in public policy? How?
  • According Brent Peterson, “Part of the issue is that when there is compartmentalization were just not exactly sure what to draw from; so they cited media as an influence, they cited education or experience, and religion is just where the pastor is talking about it but that is not the main authority figure so there is a leveling of the playing field; the YouTube or my pastor, is equally informing me on my position and religion is losing its powerful punch”. Do you agree with Dr. Peterson’s statement? Has the internet changed religion in modern society?
