Assignment 2: Presentation of a Research Article

Due Week 8 and worth 230 points

Using the research article from Assignment 1, outline the key components and findings of the study for use as a presentation outline. Consider your classmates and your professor as your audience for this presentation.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

  1. Describe the purpose and at least four major points of the article.
  2. Discuss the generalizability and validity of the study. For example, will findings of this study generalize to other people and/or situations, can we generalize from the study participants to the general population, and do the methods employed have validity?
  3. Evaluate the worthiness of the study. Discuss the value in systematically studying the topic, rather than relying on common sense. Determine whether it would it be appropriate to fund this research with publicly-funded grants.
  4. Suppose that you are lab assistant (or graduate student) to the researchers who wrote the article. Suggest what you would you do to follow up with the study. Then, identify a logical next step.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that each individual produces. Calculating your carbon footprint can give you a new perspective concerning how much you are really contributing to the greenhouse effect.

In this assignment, you will apply what you have learned about taking personal responsibility for your environment and calculate your own carbon footprint.

Using The Nature Conservancy Web site, calculate your carbon footprint. You can calculate this by clicking on the calculator and filling out the estimated values. Access this Web site using the following link:

  • The Nature Conservancy. (2011). Carbon footprint calculator: What’s my carbon footprint? Retrieved from http://www.nature.org/greenliving/carboncalculator/index.htm

Respond to the following:

  • Describe your final carbon footprint.
  • Classify where most of the carbon you generate comes from.
  • Considering all you have learned in this course, state if you feel you have a new appreciation for your role in the environment.
  • Examine how you impact the environment. Do you think you impact the environment more than you should?
  • Describe the part of your life that is contributing the most carbon.

Statistic Discussion Question

Question-1

John conducted his study to measure self-esteem among victims of domestic violence before and after they complete an 8-week program for abuse victims with 10 individuals. He calculated t = 1.9 from his data.  He had a directional hypothesis (i.e., self-esteem would be higher after attending the program). Write up the summary of his results and his conclusion regarding his hypothesis. Mark replicated John’s experiment in every way except he used 100 women in his study. He also calculated t = 1.9 from his data.  He also had the same directional hypothesis. Write up the summary of his results and his conclusion regarding his hypothesis. What observations would you make from the findings of these two studies?
