Situational Reaction

Situational Reactions

Read the following three situations.   Describe what you would do in the situation.  Integrate the elements of reasoning and/or intellectual standards in your writing to show a textbook understanding of the material behind your personal example.  Your work should be 500-600 words and integrate specifics into either the elements of reasoning, the intellectual standards or both.  Do not worry about your answers being right or wrong – you are going to be graded on your connection to the material – not the behavior you would engage in if it happened to you.

Choose 2 elements of thought and 2 intellectual standards and describe for each scenario.

Scenario A:  You are deployed in a country.  A raid went wrong, and your squad opened fire on several innocent people.  Your commander asks you and the rest of the squad to make it look like they opened fire up on you first.  How would you respond?

Scenario B: As a police officer, you pull someone over.  After searching their vehicle, you confiscate several ounces of marijuana.  The computer system is down so you cannot chronicle this bust.  Your partner tells you that his wife is sick and he could really use that marijuana at home for medicinal purposes to help her with her pain.  How would you respond to your partner?

Scenario C:  As a parent, your child has a first year teacher who gives ridiculously hard assignments.  Your kid has a four year scholarship waiting for him if he can pass this last course – even with a C.  The last assignment is an assignment that you did your graduate work on – so you know there’s no way a high schooler should be expected to do this assignment – but if your child fails this assignment, they would lose a four year scholarship.  Do you actively help them complete the assignment – or let them do it themselves – knowing they can’t do the assignment themselves and the assignment is likely to be poor because it was an inappropriately assigned paper.

Explore how phobias can be developed through classical conditioning.

· Prepare a 750- to 1,050-word paper in which you discuss phobias and addictions as related to classical and operant conditioning. Phobias and addictions are two emotional difficulties which learning theorists can account for. Be sure to include the following:

O Distinguish between classical and operant conditioning.

o Explore how phobias can be developed through classical conditioning.

o Explore how addictions can be developed through operant conditioning.

o Explain what extinction means and how it is achieved in both classical and operant conditioning.

· Format your paper according to APA standards.

· Resources: A minimum of three, credible, published articles, accessible through the UOP library databases, or similar database sources.  The textbook may be used as a reference, but it will not count as one of the three resources required.

Psychology Human Intelligence:

After carefully reading the article you chose in this unit’s second study, prepare a paper about the controversy that began when Arthur Jensen published an article about racial differences in intelligence. Present both sides of the argument, then evaluate which side has the stronger position. Find at least one other scholarly article from the Capella University Library to support your argument. Make sure to reference all articles and other resources you use in APA (6th edition) format.

· Arthur Robert Jensen, Professor Emeritus of educational psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, is known for his work on how and why individuals differ, behaviorally, from one another. In the nature-versus-nurture debate, Jensen is a major proponent of the hereditarian position, which concludes genetics play a significant role in behavioral traits and intelligence.

Jensen’s most controversial work was published in 1969 in the Harvard Educational Review. It was titled How Much Can We Boost IQ and Scholastic Achievement? Among other things, Jensen (Indiana University, 2007) concluded that “racial differences in average IQ scores are not due to any ‘culture unfairness’ intrinsic to the tests.” The work ignited a firestorm of controversy and became one of the most contentious papers in the history of intelligence research.

Locate at least two articles through the Capella Library databases and other electronic resources about the controversy surrounding intelligence and race. Choose one article that supports the racial difference position and one that opposes it. Each article you reference should have the proper citations. Resources and citations should be formatted according to APA (6th edition) style and formatting. You will use this research to complete the Unit 4 assignment.
