Case study 1. Zara, aged 40 years, and Alessia, aged 35 years, have been living together for one year. The household includes Zara’s adolescent son and Alessia’s two pre-adolescent daughters. Alessia’s elderly Italian parents continue to express confusion as to why Alessia left her ‘childhood sweet-heart’ husband for Zara, and Alessia is rarely included in any large family gatherings. Her parent’s state this is to avoid embarrassment, as they feel Alessia’s new relationship will not last and so have not told many family members. Zara’s family is supportive which makes Alessia feel grateful, but also ‘jealous’. Alessia recently lost her casual employment at a warehouse owned by a friend of her ex-husband. She is convinced her ex-husband was responsible for this, even though the business had been losing money for years and cutting back on staff. Alessia is now a full-time ‘homemaker’, but Zara’s wage and Alessia’s child support money are barely enough to maintain the household. Increasingly Alessia finds herself struggling to control her anger and feelings of hopelessness and worries that this will impact on her relationship with her children, and with Zara. She describes feeling isolated from her past life, and unable to adapt to her new life, resulting in constant fights with Zara. She has come to see a counsellor in the local community centre, after she became verbally abusive towards Zara’s adolescent son over a small household task. Comprehensive and effective use of relevant academic literature from credible sources Case study Content Some case study assignments may require you to provide a short summary of the case in your own words, especially if you have provided your own case study. This will help provide context for the rest of your analysis. The main part of the assignment will involve you applying the concepts and theories you have learnt about to the case study. This means that you will be referencing research and theory to support your ideas. A case study might also require you to provide examples of what you would say to a client or another person in the case, and what they might say. These are called verbatim examples. Structure Most case studies need to be structured in the same way as an essay, with an introduction, a series of body paragraphs and a conclusion. However, unlike essays, case studies usually have headings based on information in the task description or marking criteria. For example, a client case study assessment that asks students to identify the main issues and prepare a plan of action may have headings such as Summary of the case, Identification of main issues, Recommended action plan. Style Case studies require you to write in the third person (people’s names, he/she/they, the counsellor, the client, and so forth) when discussing the theories or research of authors, or the client, the professional or the organisation in the case. A case study might require you to use first person (‘I’, ‘my’ etc) to provide your own reflections about the case, its personal impact on you, or how you would apply theories and skills to the case. Check with your educator about whether you should use first person.
