In a study of the effect of anxiety on the need for affiliation, participants were told either that they would either be giving a speech to a large audience of peers (high anxiety) or that they would be speaking to one experimenter (low anxiety). Subjects were then given a choice between waiting alone before speaking or waiting in the company of others.
