Those who plea-bargained for crimes have often stated that they did not know the options they had for either sentencing and/or treatment, especially those with substance abuse charges. This could be the case for some convicted of drug-related crimes and might not know they are eligible for a diversion program. As a drug and alcohol counselor, one must be informed of what the law is regarding drug crimes, treatment options, in addition to the laws that relate to the practice of a drug and alcohol counselor.
This assignment focuses on drug court or some other type of diversion program for drug offenders. A diversion program is an option an offender may take if they qualify to avoid jail/prison if they complete the program. Drug Court, established in 2000 under Proposition 36, provides offenders the opportunity to complete the treatment within Drug Court’s confines so that the offender is not incarcerated. The primary focus is for the offenders to receive supportive services to help them break the cycle of addiction. There are other options that a judge or probation may impose on an offender, such as completing a residential program. Of course, most offenders choose diversion so that they do not be incarcerated.
For the assignment, you are to explore a diversion program, such as Drug Court (it can be another type of diversion program if you choose), focusing on its objective, processes it uses, and effectiveness. You can also discuss how it fits in with the continuum of care for treating substance abusers. Your reflection containing your thoughts is also welcome.
