My purpose in this speech is to educate you about the life and legacy of Jesse Owens, and to emphasize the impact he had on American society.

Jesse Owens was born on September 12, 1913, in Oakville, Alabama. He grew up in a time of segregation and racial discrimination, where opportunities for African Americans were limited. However, despite the odds against him, Owens went on to become one of the most successful athletes of his time.

My first main point is Owens’ rise to fame as a track and field athlete. Owens began his athletic career in high school and continued on to college at Ohio State University. He made history at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he won four gold medals and shattered multiple world records. Owens’ success as an athlete challenged racial stereotypes and showcased the potential of African American athletes.

My second main point is Owens’ impact on the Civil Rights Movement. Despite his Olympic success, Owens faced discrimination and racism when he returned to the United States. He used his platform to advocate for civil rights, and became a symbol of hope for the African American community.
