PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITY!
One paper will be chosen to submit to ADHA’s Access for publication in Strive – The Student View section. Guidelines for submission are on the following page. Go to the following website to view previous student articles published in Access: http://www.adha.org/publications/strive/strive.htm
NOTES:
“Strive—the Student View” Author Guidelines
“Strive—the Student View” was conceived as the answer to an expressed need from student members of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association to include them in the entire association process.
Who May Submit?
Anyone currently enrolled in a dental hygiene educational program may submit a column for consideration; however, no submission will be considered if a faculty mentor is not identified. When submitting, please copy your faculty mentor on all correspondence.
The Faculty Mentor
The purpose of including the faculty mentor in the process is to ensure that an educator from the author’s school has read the paper and believes that it appropriately represents the school’s student work at the author’s level of study. Access staff will edit the column for style and return it to the author and faculty mentor for approval, along with standard author agreement form for the author. The faculty mentor will be identified at the end of the article, following a brief author biographical statement including the name of the program and the author’s year of study.
Content
“Strive—the Student View” columns need not be prepared specifically for Access; previously created coursework is welcome. Researched papers must be accompanied by references, with primary references preferred. Wikipedia is not acceptable as a reference. Every statement of fact must be referenced, the exception being reports of the author’s own research or experience; for example
| Needs a reference | Doesn’t need a reference |
| Dental hygiene students support the ADHP. | I surveyed my classmates and found that 100 percent of them support the ADHP. |
| Nursing home residents display an oral health care knowledge deficit. | We visited a nursing home and provided flossing instructions to five residents who said they were surprised they had been doing it ineffectively. |
| Loupes help dental hygienists maintain optimal body alignment. | Using the loupes helped me maintain the body alignment I had been taught to use. |
In addition to researched articles, “Strive—the Student View” also welcomes articles about the concerns and experiences of dental hygiene students, for example, how to prepare for a test, the importance of stress management for students or developing the leadership characteristics necessary for a successful dental hygiene career.
Submission Guidelines
Please submit no more than 1,800 words in an electronic document attached to an email message to JeanM@adha.net. Include up to six appropriate photographs, figures and tables.
Author Photos
If your work is accepted, each author will be asked to submit a high-quality digital headshot. In the case of multiple authors, a group photograph is acceptable if you prefer.
Also Keep in Mind
“Strive—Special Feature” is a column written by Access staff to highlight student projects. For example, if your class has participated in a successful fundraising or outreach project that might serve as an example for students at other schools, write to Access with a brief description and we will consider setting up interviews with participants.
“Strive—Achievement” is a column written by Access staff to highlight student achievements. For example, if you received an award or honor for dental hygiene related activities, write to Access with a brief description and we will consider setting up an interview.
