Historical Perspectives
Broadcasters in the 1920s welcomed government regulation, and I think during the 1920s the broadcasting had changed then but grew more with government intervention as the years progressed. According to the Federal Communications Commission (2010), “The FCC’s vision is to promote innovation, investment, competition and consumer empowerment for the communications platforms of today and the future.” Although journalism mass media started in the 20th century, there were still some regulations about appropriate privacies and freedoms. As (Pember & Calvert, 2014) suggested in historian times appropriate privacies and freedoms were still being pronounced as not having a real meaning for freedom of the press. To answer that question no I do not think that the regulations “kept with the times” because before the 1920s the government still was attempting to figure out the First Amendment. Federal or state regulations have changed since it started in the 20th century. However, today there are controversies that people obtain libel of defamation lawsuits because of tyrannical, offensive or threatening speeches and messages with broadcasting. Therefore, for the near future for federal or state regulation, there will be a better communication world to promote better media technology with ensuing records about public figures and allow privacy facts to be more efficient when procuring any information about a public figure. I think 10 to 20 years from now journalism will too have a new meaning for broadcasting to protect the media from getting sued as much as they are now. I believe that the future of journalism will be more practical at releasing news by procuring information the legal way only.
