Basic QuestionsThe struggle of the woman in this case is taken from her own autobiographical book which describes a movement out of a hopeless lifestyle into a sense of self-respect that came with her rejection of alcohol and one night stands. We are invited to look at conversion in a new light as she attains a sense of herself and her value. In view of this account of conversion how do you understand that journey toward deeper integrity? What does conversion mean for her personal journey?

here is one discussion, maybe you can take some info from here:
In the first question, I view this journey toward deeper integrity to be a very long and complicated personal experience, yet extraordinarily rich and rewarding as Heather moves further from her past and closer to Christ and those around her. The good news is that she has already taken the most difficult step, she admitted,

“I’m broken and I need help”. This admission opens her up to conversion, grace, and God’s love. Now she can reach deeper within herself to rid herself of the sinful life that she currently lives under the influence of alcohol and bad relationships. She will gain integrity with less resistance to the goodness of Christ. It will be difficult to abandon old habits, attitudes, and behaviors that she has lived by for many years. She is a stranger to true happiness and integrity.

The journey toward integrity is one’s conscious decision to recognize God’s call to rescue one from sin and start a new life over time. Truthfulness will grow for Heather along the trajectory away from sin toward the light of goodness. For Heather, conversion will mean that her personal journey will take an entirely new path. She will have to place her deepest trust in something/someone that is very unfamiliar to her, Christ and his infinitely strong love. Heather’s personal journey will involve various ongoing components.

She will have to throw away her thoughts and desires for alcohol and the poor behaviors that are its side effects. For example, she will need to attain a stable job away from alcohol that provides income ample for a healthy life style. She needs to associate with people who will bring her closer to discipleship. Heather will have to establish new patterns that embrace the company of good people who cast positive influence on her as opposed to the drunken counterparts who brought her down previously.

Heather’s journey must include new loyalties to goodness, devotion to Christ, and a commitment to discipleship.
This is a tall order for someone who has essentially been drunk for two decades so it is best to take steps. First, it is helpful to think beyond day-to-day living and focus on the truth and meaning behind the change that she is striving to make.

Next, she needs to awaken her conscience and take responsibility for her actions. Then, she will be prepared for disorientation, which is out with the old (sin) and in with the new (deep integrity). She can depend on her faith to help her through this process if she keeps Christ as her focal point and “center of gravity”. In the end, conversion will mean that she has become a disciple of Christ. Consequently, her personal journey will go in an entirely new direction toward goodness.

In the second question, in order for David and Linda to experience a sense of new beginnings they must engage in conversations with themselves and others. First, Linda and David must each look inward to assess their own feelings and lives (past and present) to understand where each of them is coming from individually. Then, they must converse with one another as well as others for counsel on how to move forward. Linda needs to continue healing from the incest that her grandfather imposed on her.

She would likely benefit from confronting her surviving family members about the abuse that took place years ago. Ironically, it is encouraging that Linda has not suppressed all the memories of the abuse so she can talk about it and know that it is real. She must realize that David may be using alcohol and sexual intercourse as a source of control. She does not have to submit herself to him, nor should she blame herself for his ‘sins’. Also, Linda must recognize that David’s alcohol abuse may be a more serious issue than a lack of unemployment. Therefore, it is important that she discuss this with David and they remain aware of his consumption going forward.

David needs to step back from sexual relations with Linda until she is ready and willing to engage sexually with him. In the meantime, perhaps it would be good for him to focus on his relationship with God and support Linda’s needs. Together, David and Linda need to communicate openly with one another about their feelings and progress in reconciling their marriage. Spiritual and Professional counseling seems like a good combination for them to work on their marriage.

It is important for them to establish what their goal is whether it is to remain married or get divorced. It is easier to accomplish a goal if you can define what it is. Since they still love one another and care for one another, it makes sense for them to work on marriage. Finally, it is essential that they inform their children, with the age appropriate details, about their family situation.

Hopefully David and Linda’s situation will help Reverend Derick counsel couples who are preparing for marriage. He should encourage couples to examine themselves individually to make sure that he/she deals with his/her own issues before entering into marriage. Couples today often meet and communicate by texting and emailing one another. It is important that they share deep conversations face to face in order to build a strong foundation for their marriage.
