Basic QuestionsThe struggle of the woman in this case is taken from her own autobiographical book which describes a movement out of a hopeless lifestyle into a sense of self-respect that came with her rejection of alcohol and one night stands. We are invited to look at conversion in a new light as she attains a sense of herself and her value. In view of this account of conversion how do you understand that journey toward deeper integrity? What does conversion mean for her personal journey?

The journey toward integrity is one’s conscious decision to recognize God’s call to rescue one from sin and start a new life over time. Truthfulness will grow for Heather along the trajectory away from sin toward the light of goodness. For Heather, conversion will mean that her personal journey will take an entirely new path. She will have to throw away her thoughts and desires for alcohol and the poor behaviors that are its side effects. For example, she will need to attain a stable job away from alcohol that provides income ample for a healthy life style. She needs to associate with people who will bring her closer to discipleship. Heather will have to establish new patterns that embrace the company of good people who cast positive influence on her as opposed to the drunken counterparts who brought her down previously.

Heather’s journey must include new loyalties to goodness, devotion to Christ, and a commitment to discipleship.

This is a tall order for someone who has essentially been drunk for two decades so it is best to take steps. First, it is helpful to think beyond day-to-day living and focus on the truth and meaning behind the change that she is striving to make.

Next, she needs to awaken her conscience and take responsibility for her actions. Then, she will be prepared for disorientation, which is out with the old (sin) and in with the new (deep integrity). In the second question, in order for David and Linda to experience a sense of new beginnings they must engage in conversations with themselves and others. First, Linda and David must each look inward to assess their own feelings and lives (past and present) to understand where each of them is coming from individually. She would likely benefit from confronting her surviving family members about the abuse that took place years ago. Ironically, it is encouraging that Linda has not suppressed all the memories of the abuse so she can talk about it and know that it is real. She must realize that David may be using alcohol and sexual intercourse as a source of control. She does not have to submit herself to him, nor should she blame herself for his ‘sins’. Also, Linda must recognize that David’s alcohol abuse may be a more serious issue than a lack of unemployment. Therefore, it is important that she discuss this with David and they remain aware of his consumption going forward.

David needs to step back from sexual relations with Linda until she is ready and willing to engage sexually with him. In the meantime, perhaps it would be good for him to focus on his relationship with God and support Linda’s needs. Together, David and Linda need to communicate openly with one another about their feelings and progress in reconciling their marriage.
