For example, imagine that a researcher wanted to measure the effectiveness of a cancer drug in treating lung cancer amongst nonsmokers. Would drawing a sample containing only males constitute a representative sample? Likely not, as there may be gender-based differences in how the drug is processed and transported within the body.
Create a research scenario, like the one above, and use it to address the following prompts: (a) what sampling procedure was used? (b) from what general population was the sample drawn? (c) do you believe that the sample was representative of the population from which it was drawn? Why or why not?; and (d) what changes could you suggest that would make the scenario more rigorous in terms of sampling procedures and/or controlling for nonsampling errors?
