“Todayâ€s careers are known as protean careers. A protean career is based on self-direction with the goal of psychological success in oneâ€s work.” (Noe, 2010. p. 450). An organization needs to assist their employees to seek a protean career. A path of self-direction that relies on flexibility, learning, relationships and psychological success, as opposed to the traditional career that is guided by promotion, security, know how, and formal training.

“Protean career orientation has become increasingly salient in avolatile global economy in which widespread career uncertainty forces workers to take greater control over career management to remain employable in a highly competitive labor market.” (Direnzo, Greenhaus, & Weer. 2015) Psychological success is dependent on the individual and their definition of what success looks like. “People with such an orientation strive for personal growth and they have a strong desire for autonomy and self-fulfillment” (Lim Ngo, & Cheung, 2019). Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV) says, “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” Christian leaders are taught to plan and to be driven, not necessarily self-driven, but God-driven. Calling on God to learn His will, can light His spirit in us to strive for the purpose that He provides. The future of training and development will continue to change to fit the needs of the many definitions of success.
