In the last two weeks we explored two of the most prominent Orphan Tales that were added by Galland to his French version of the Nights and especially the famous motifs that they introduce (or at least made famous), such as “Open, Sesame!” and the flying carpet. In this reaction essay, I would like you to consider the adaptations of the Orphan Tales and their motifs and how they contribute, or do not contribute, to the “distorting lens” of European ideas of the Orient. Taking the Paramount’s 1937 adaptation of the Nights to their Popeye the Sailor Man, do you think that the usage of such motifs and stories represent a purposefully prejudicial or hostile attitude towards Arab culture, one that is merely just incidentally so, or something else altogether?
