See course grading standards (from your day one packet).You may choose one of the topics below or design your own. If you choose to design your own, you must consult with me, via e-mail. Specific Topic Ideas:1)Discuss the play’s treatment of a social problem or issue. For instance, discuss:attitudes towards courtship and/ormarriage in Twelfth Night, Macbeth, or The Tempest, or attitudes toward and expectations of authority in 1 Henry 4, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, Macbeth, or The Tempest, or analyze conceptions of honor in 1 Henry 4, Macbeth, or The Tempest. Or consider representations of masculinities in 1 Henry 4 and Twelfth Night or representations of labor/working class in 1 Henry 4, Twelfth Night, or The Tempest.2) Consider the accuracy and usefulness of generic categories by comparing the treatment of a similar concept in two plays from different genres. Focus your comparison on a particular issue—revenge, redemption, female protagonists, how the plays treat sexuality or marital conflict, villain figures, etc. For example, what does justice look like when you consider its representation in Hamlet or Macbeth, vs. Twelfth Nightor The Tempest? Or, how does the representation of the conflict within a family differ in a tragedy (Hamlet), a history (1Henry4), and a comedy (Twelfth Night)?Remember:Every paper needs a thesis statement. This means that you are not only presenting a summary of information you found, you are creating your own argument based on your interpretation of the play. While the research will make clear others’ positions, your position should be clear to me and is the one I most want to understand and read about.Format: Your paper must follow MLA guidelines for formatting, including being double-spaced. Your name, the instructor’s name, the course, the title of the paper, and the date should appear on the cover page, along with the USCA oath. Include a works cited (see below). Please number the pages and place your last name on each page (after the first) next to the page number. Please proofread.Submission: I am setting up an assignment in Blackboard so that you can submit your essay there. Submit it as one document: title page, essay, works cited. I have turned on the SafeAssign tool—this creates a report on your source use. Some students find this to be a helpful tool for revision. The assignment is set up to accept multiple submissions (3), so you can submit and then make a change and resubmit. I grade the most recent submission. I suggest that you keep an electronic AND hard copy of your paper.PLAGIARISM: You must be careful to document your use of sources and your indebtedness to other people’s work. Plagiarism consists not only in copying another person’s essay (published or not), but also in neglecting to acknowledge the influence of others’ facts, ideas, or expression. Any attempt to present other people’s words or ideas as your own, or without sufficient acknowledgment, constitutes plagiarism, and will be handled according to the class and university policies (see plagiarism policy for this course on course information sheet, from day one). It is also plagiarism to recycle your own work from other courses. Please see the Student Handbook for procedures with regard to plagiarism. Remember these rules:1. Direct quotation: When you use the exact words of a consulted authority, you must place every quoted word in quotation marks, and attach a footnote or parenthetical reference to each quoted passage. Every footnote or parenthetical reference must identify the source used and give the page number on which the borrowed material can be found. Citations from plays: When you quote from a play, please cite act, scene, and line numbers in parentheses following the quotation. Separate lines of verse with a forward slash as in: “For I must tell you friendly in your ear, / Sell when you can, you are not for all markets” (As You Like It 3.5.59-60). 2. Indirect quotation: When paraphrasing the words of a consulted authority, give an exact footnote or parenthetical reference to each summarized passage. Summaries can be introduced by phrases such as “According to…” or “As…suggests.”3. General acknowledgment: When you make general use of the thoughts, ideas, or information found in another person’s work, acknowledge that use: cite them or attach a footnote.4. Works Cited: Remember to prepare a Works Cited list in accordance with MLA guidelines (8th ed).
