Case Study/In depth analysis
Section I (earn up to 27pts) Questions 1-3 should be answered by addressing forces and not individual theories. There is no page length, but respond thoroughly for full credit. You should number your responses, corresponding to each question. 1. What are the key components of each force (force 1, 2, and 3)? Summarize key components and do not address individual theorists (up to 9pts)
2. What are the therapeutic interventions? What are the goals of each force? By therapeutic intervention and goals, I mean, what needs to happen for change to occur? For a client/patient to feel better? To be considered “healthy?” (up to 9pts)
3. What are the limitations of each force? (up to 9 pts)
Section II Case of Joan
Joan is a 43 year old, African American female, living in an apartment. She has 2 kids, ages 8 and 14. Joan works 2 jobs to support her kids, and daily living expenses. Her husband died shortly after they had their 2nd child. Joan does not receive any help or support in addition to her salary. However, as a family, they struggle financially, and Joan often has to skip a meal to make sure her kids have enough to eat. She attends a free clinic to address her ongoing symptoms of depression, mostly because a friend convinced her to go. She is not too thrilled with sharing personal stuff with a stranger, and does not believe therapy is going to help her. However, lately, she has been feeling increasingly sad, negative, and feeling like she just can’t do anything right. She feels like she’ll never be happy and content with her life. She has stopped hanging out with friends and is much more interested in going to sleep than hanging out or doing anything for herself. She has dated a few men in the last 2 years, but they were all very jealous and verbally abusive. Joan is wondering if all men are like that, and perhaps she’s meant to be single for the rest of her life. As mentioned, she is reluctant about therapy, and is hoping a few sessions will do the trick and fix her. She doesn’t have much time to spend on therapy, as she is raising 2 kids, working 2 jobs, and is taking one class online toward her undergraduate degree. She is desperately trying to better her life but lately, she is feeling hopeless that a change is possible. Questions about helping Joan (earn up to 13pts)
1. Which force (1, 2, or 3) would be the best fit for Joan and why? I’m looking for you to assess what theoretical orientation should a therapist have in working with Joan. Explain why you think your chosen force is the best type of an intervention and why? (up to 3pts)
2. Pretend that you are an eclective therapist, meaning you integrate all 3 forces into your therapeutic orientation and is how you will work with Joan. What will your intervention look like if all 3 forces are integrated? As you address how you will help, you might also want to include the type of questions you have for Joan, as it applies to the forces. Much remains unknown about Joan but you can ask those questions as they pertain to the force. When thinking about information you are missing and/or would like to know more about, pay close attention to whether the force allows you to ask those questions (up to 5pts).
3. In working with Joan and utilizing forces 1-3, what’s missing? What would you like to address but can’t because the force does not allow or does not see a need to do so? What are the barriers that you may encounter in helping Joan from forces 1-3 only? (up to 5pts)
Total points 40 (100%). In order to do well on this case study, you must answer each question thoroughly and integrate the information, concepts from your textbook, class notes and lectures, and particularly notes addressing the forces.
