In this essay, I will explore the ethical issues surrounding transitioning. More concretely, I will be exploring the dilemma concerning whether or not minors possess the first person authority necessary to make such life altering decisions. First I will discuss in detail the notion of Bettcher’s First-Person authority, and its role in gender identity. Then I will consider the role played by social influence—whether or not one truly is trans (if it can be a misdiagnosis or something else). What are the positives and negatives to allowing transition? On one hand, transitioning early (taking hormones) would benefit a trans person, but only if they are truly trans (if their FPA is to be taken seriously). On the other hand, puberty is a source of dysphoria for trans people. If a trans minor was not allowed by doctors and parents to transition early enough or take hormone blockers, then a sense of negative feelings develop (resentment, suffering, etc). How can we ethically square the FPA of minors and grant them sufficient autonomy?
