After reading case 3.2 (p. 77) from the textbook (I uploaded a scanned version for those of you who don’t have access to the book yet). So far we talked briefly about the instances in which the government provides services that are traditionally provided by private businesses. As you will see when you read, this case shows the opposite. In reality, government contracting out and privatization are very common these days even with services that are traditionally provided, and “should be” provided by government.
1. Do you think it matters who provides government services? Why? Fans of contracting out say that whoever can do the job for the lowest cost ought to get the work (economic rationale).
2.Do you like the idea of arming private employees and allowing them to shoot to kill, in the interest of protecting government buildings and their employees? Or should lethal forces be a power given only to government guards doing the government’s work? What about government work that is “less serious?”
3.In general context, how do you think we can categorize the work that you think government ought to perform?
