Please write a short essay, about 400 – 700 words, in which you describe and discuss your perspective on the study of religion. This should include all of the following:
Introduce the paper by describing your specific interest in studying religion. What do you most want to understand about religion? What questions do you want to ask? (This should be about religion in general, though it may also include exploring the perspectives of specific religions)
Identify what you think are the key challenges you might face in studying religion? Do you have more of the perspective of a religious person or someone who is outside of religion?
What biases do you need to confront? What qualities do you need to develop most?
What strengths do you have as a budding scholar of religion? What unique perspectives do you bring?
Provide your own basic definition of religion? This might be very rough, but explain what you would include in such a definition and why.
Be sure to include a conclusion either summarizing your key ideas or suggesting important points you want your reader to take away from the essay.
Your essay should reference specific ideas from our readings and other course material, or perhaps even reference to specific discussions you engaged in on the discussion boards. I do not need formal citations for this essay, but please do include clear references to the material so that you are clearly showing where you are drawing ideas from (especially with quotations).
Please be sure to include a header with your name, date, etc., and include a title, centered, at the top of your paper.
