Ensuring the criminal justice system’s moral authority/legitimacy is an important part of policymakers’ jobs in proposing legislation, voting on legislation, and ultimately the passage of legislation. For this assignment, please do the following: (1) briefly describe what the criminal justice system’s moral authority/legitimacy means to you, (2) summarize a news media article that captures an event/instance in which the criminal justice system’s moral authority/legitimacy could be questioned or limited (make sure you provide the proper citation for the article), (3) based upon the news media story that you have summarized, propose a criminal justice policy that could be enacted to improve the criminal justice system’s moral authority/legitimacy. Topic 2 The laws and policies of the United States criminal justice system are heavily influenced by current events and public opinion. The use of research has historically been less influential in criminal justice policy decisions than public opinion. For this assignment, please do the following: (1) briefly describe why you believe public opinion dominates criminal justice policy decisions rather than research evidence, (2) describe one of the criminological theories discussed in class and propose a criminal justice policy based on the theory’s assumptions/components, (3) summarize a news media article that captures an event/instance in which the criminological theory and associated policy you have identified and proposed could be used (make sure you provide the proper citation for the article).
