The Art and Science of Persuasion

The Art and Science of Persuasion

[WLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

To prepare for this assignment, please read the Harnessing the Science of Persuasion article.

Persuasion is oftentimes considered an art, but it is based on the psychological science of social influence. With knowledge of the key principles that undergird this process, you may become a savvier consumer. You may also find ways to implement these strategies effectively in your personal and professional life.

Before beginning your paper, select one of the six fundamental principles identified in Cialdini (2014).

  • Assemble at least three advertisements, commercials, or personal experiences/observations that illustrate this principle. Do not use examples from the course resources.
    • Submit your examples (paste ads into the document, include URL links, and/or provide a synopsis), along with a one paragraph description of each clearly indicating how the advertisement, commercial, or personal experience/observation illustrates the selected principle.

Then, in your paper,

  • Examine in depth how social psychological principles of persuasion are relevant, citing scholarly research (which may include course resources) on the specific principle you are addressing in your analysis.
  • Identify characteristics of the communicator, the message, and the target audience, considering key situational and contextual factors.
  • Produce a plan to intentionally enhance persuasiveness.
    • What are various alternative principles and/or techniques one might employ effectively?
  • Discuss ethical issues relevant to the collected examples, as well as your own persuasive plan.
  • Apply this insight to your own personal or professional life. Specifically, how might you utilize this insight moving forward?

Discussion: Quality of Life: Perspectives

Discussion: Quality of Life: Perspectives

The word city conjures up many images, drawn from personal experience and perhaps influenced by characterizations in film, literature, or other cultural expressions. Your expectation for how life should be lived may also come from multiple perspectives. Do citizens refer to a nostalgic past? Were things really better in the past? Is the economy attracting new residents? How is the city adjusting to the influx? In this Discussion, you define quality of life in a city through a particular perspective.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Read “The Secrets of the World’s Happiest Cities” and “Cities: Places Sacred, Safe, and Busy,” located in this week’s Resources area.
  • View the media in this week’s Resources area, Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Urban Studies.

Post a 250-word response that explains the best perspective through which to define quality of life in a city. Choose from the following perspectives:

  • Commerce
  • Public Health
  • Culture/Religion
  • History

In your post, be sure to:

  • Use the place you live to provide real-life examples of how quality of life can be measured. (SHREVEPORT, LA)
  • Refer to one specific example from your course reading.

Note: Be sure to support your ideas by connecting them to the week’s Learning Resources or something you have read, heard, seen, or experienced.

How teachers align assessments to objectives.

Formative and summative assessments are used to check for student   understanding, skill development, and mastery of material. Being able   to identify the characteristics and purpose of each kind of assessment   assists in the ability to choose the proper assessment type at the   most appropriate time.

Create a 12-15 slide digital presentation on assessments for a   presentation to your colleagues. The presentation should include:

  • Description of the purpose and characteristics of each     assessment type.
  • Two examples of each assessment type.
  • One advantage and one disadvantage for using technology with     each type of assessment.
  • How teachers align     assessments to objectives.
  • How data gathered from these     assessments would be utilized in the lesson planning process.
  • Using your Topic 2 assignment, describe one formative and one     summative assessment that aligns to the assignment’s standard     and learning objective.
  • A title slide, reference slide, and     presenter’s notes.

The digital presentation should include graphics that are relevant   to the content, visually appealing, and use space appropriately.

Support your presentation with 2-3 scholarly resources.
