Self-Regulation in Curriculum

Week 3 – Assignment

Self-Regulation in Curriculum

When children transition from being at home to a learning environment, such as a home daycare, center, preschool, or elementary school, they need to be taught what the expectations are for their behavior. “Just as teachers provide opportunities for children to learn about science, math, and literacy, they must also provide opportunities for children to learn how to interact with others and manage their behavior independently and in groups” (Kostelnik, Soderman, Whiren, & Rupiper, 2015, p. 167). This type of behavior is often referred to as self-regulation. As early childhood educators, we must provide opportunities for our students to engage in learning activities that allow them to learn how to control their own behavior. For this assignment, begin by watching the video Sesame Street: The Waiting Game With Guy Smiley!

Links to an external site.

After watching the video, address the following in your paper:

Discuss the three most significant concepts that you learned about promoting self-regulation in children from the video, Chapter 5 of your primary text, and/or your own experience working with young children.

Describe at least two developmental and two experience-based influences on self-regulation in young children. Use either a scholarly or credible source to support your description.

Create a measurable learning objective for a potential lesson or activity for one of your developmental influences and one of your experience-based influences in order to foster the development of self-regulation skills.

Your learning objectives need to be clear and measurable.

If you need help with how to create learning objectives, refer back to the objectives section of the Early Childhood and Child Development Lesson Plan Handbook you used in Week Two, review pages 81-82 of your primary text, or visit the Week Three Instructor Guidance.

You will develop one of these objectives into an actual lesson plan for your Final Paper; when developing your objectives for this assignment; make sure it aligns with your overall theme for the unit.

Explain how the learning objectives you created will allow you to implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum for your students regarding self-regulation. Use your state’s early learning standards as support for this section.

1. A: I read the first and second chapter from the “Human Learning 6th edition”. I learned that there are many perspectives on learning. Also, they vary on the definition of the learning. From behavioral point of view, learning is change in the behavior. I understood from the second chapter that there are different factors that influence our brain such as Heredity, Environment, and experiences. Also, I got the idea behind how our brains observe new information “interconnections among neurons”. Also, I learned that from brain research we can revise theories of learning. However, brain research cannot determine what to teach.

B: I showed video about animal cognition and the mind of animals.

http://content.time.com/time/video/player/0,32068,424741717001_2009072,00.html .

2. I browse “Teachingchannel.org”

https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/strategies-for-student-centered-discussion# I learned strategy for Student-centered discussion. This strategy taught me how I capable to manage, monitor and sustain a whole class discussion and How I can begin the lesson with student reflection and a guiding question equip students for the discussion. This is a good way to make my class effectively by students. Objective this strategy is Master the art and science of engaging students in rigorous discussion.

3. For this goal, I could not contact the teacher because I have midterm exam on Statistic course. I will contact them next week.

1. A: I read the third and fourth chapter from the “Human Learning 6th edition”. I learned how our brains learn something new “changes in the connections among neurons” I learned how human behave. Also, I learned how differentiate between neutral, conditioned, and unconditioned stimulus and responses. In chapter four I learned another type of conditioning which is operant conditioning “a response that is followed by a reinforcer is strengthened and therefore more likely to occur again” Moreover, there are three conditions for the reinforce, first the reinforce must follow the response, second it must be immediate, and finally it must be contingent. Also, I learned the different types of the reinforce which are Primary, Secondary or conditioned reinforce, Positive reinforcement, and Negative reinforcement. Also, I learned the different types of the punishments such as Physical, Psychological, Extra classwork, Out-of-school suspension, and Missing recess. Most important point I learned from this chapter is there is no one can say this is the best punishment or best reinforce because it depends on each case. For example, physical punishment may not be appropriate for teens and may be good choice for other.

B: This video illustrates the general idea of chapter 3 for this theory “Classical Conditioning” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9qHbx58dv4v , and this video shows us the idea of operant conditioning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_ctJqjlrHA

2. For this goal, I could not browse “Teachingchannel.org” because I do not have time my daughter is sick.

3. In this week, I contacted two teachers their work in different school, their students only girls. I ask them what their strategies used to teach students. The first teacher her name Fatimah. She is a teacher in Al Hamra high school her age 27 years. She used project to show her student the lesson, and they are interested when they see a picture or video include the lesson. Another teacher her name Mona her age 40 years, and she is a teacher in Al Hade high school, she does not use any technology in her class just a prod to teach the student.

1. I read the fifth chapter from the “Human Learning 6th edition”. It is about how we apply previous theories, those in chapters three and four, in the classroom. I learned some important concerns about the using of punishment and reinforcement. For example, if we punish a behavior that does not mean it will never occur again. It may happen if the parent or the teacher is absent. Moreover, I learned that we do not need to provide reinforces for a desired behavior that kids like to do by themselves. Also, I realize that we should explain for students what are the behavior that will be reinforced or punished and why. Also, I learned some strategies to decrease undesirable behaviors such as extinguishing responses, presenting noncontingent reinforcement, reinforcing other behaviors, and using punishment.

2. I browse “Teachingchannel.org” https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/technology-in-the-classroom I found this video, it is about the impact of technology on the lesson. when the teacher used technology in her class, she made her class effectively, and students was happy. I learned technology is a good strategy to teach students and thy will be more understanding the lesson.

3. In this week, I contacted new teacher her name Amal, she is a teacher in Alshafa high school her age 25 years. I asked her the same question I used with teacher Fatimah and Mona. What strategies used to teach students. And she told me that, I used same strategies but without using any tools of technology like project or using video in class because her city is village just she uses board to teach her student.

1. A: I read the beginning of the sixth chapter from the “Human Learning 6th edition”. It is talking about social cognation theory. Also, I learned that people observe other behavior and it consequences and they are more likely to imitate them if they like the consequences. What I like in this theory is that people can learn from each other mistakes. I learned some of the limitations of the behaviorist theory. For example, sometimes imitation does not take palace directly after the observation which is not appropriate in the behaviorist theory where the respond must follow the stimuli immediately. Also, I learned that people can learn a behavior and observe it, but they maybe cannot perform it. Also, I knew that there is some mental process such as paying attention must take place while human learning.

B: This video shows us the idea of social cognitive theory, which is, depends on learning from observation and imitating other people’s behavior https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8v7xvTsZj4

2. In this week, I could not browse “Teachingchannel.org” because I have midterm on biology class.

3. For this goal, I do not have time to contact the teachers every week, it is too much.

I will contact to them monthly.

1. I read the rest of the sixth chapter from the “Human Learning 6th edition”. It is really an intensive chapter. I learned how a model can teach other and influence them. I learned some of the important characteristics of the model that make people want to imitate a model (such as prestige). This point is important for us as parents who want their kids imitate them or for teacher or coach who want his or her students observe their behavior. Also, I learned different types of behavior that model can teach it to observers such as academic skills, aggression, and personal behaviors. Moreover, I was exposed to the conditions that are necessary to allow this modeling to occur which are attention, retention, physical ability, and motivation.

2. I browse “Teachingchannel.org”. I found a good video for “Create a class culture that supports learning” How does Ms. Wessling develop authentic and purposeful experiences for her students? From this video, I taught what is the relationship between culture and engagement and how does Ms. Wessling model her expectations? https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/culture-of-learning

3. For this goal, I will contact the teachers next week for this month.

1. A: I read the seventh chapter from the “Human Learning 6th edition”. It is talking about cognitive theory. I learned that cognitive theory describes how people perceive, think, remember and interpret information from mental point of view. It demonstrates that learning is an internal rather than external change.

I learned Gestalt theory such as law of proximity. Also, I learned that pairing things together it seems to be easier to remember it. I have experienced this while I was studying English as second language (English vs Arabic vocabularies).

B: This video shows us the ideas of Tolman, which are latent learning and cognitive maps. https://youtu.be/ALJ9BjXJubg

2. I browse “Teachingchannel.org”, I found this video “Formative Assessment Using the U-P-S Strategy”. It is mean Assess how students understand, plan, and solve problems. I taught how does Ms. Mickle assess learning through each part of the U-P-S strategy, and how can students use this strategy to assess their own understanding, how could the data gathered from this strategy be used to inform instruction? https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/ups-strategy-as-assessment-tool

3. I contacted all this teachers Fatimah, Mona and Amal. For this month, they have a same strategy they use it before from the ministry curriculum.

1 A: I read chapter 12th from the “Human Learning 6th edition”. It is talking about Cognitive-Development Perspectives. I learned that Piaget was one of the biggest scientists of this theory. I learned who human pass four different stages. The first one is Sensory-Motor from 0 to two years. The second stage is Pre-operational from two to seven where he or she has the ability to represent the objects mentally. The third stage is Concrete Operational from 7 to 12. The last one is Formal operational from 12 to adulthood where he or she is able to present thoughts and opinions about unseen objects. I understood how human brain builds new knowledge from Piaget point of view. He, Piaget, use the word “scheme” to describe the body of the ideas or thought that take place and related to each other in human brain. Also, I learned the factors that can have a great influence on development such as Heredity, Social interaction, and the environment. I learned how human brain works when it encounters a new experience. It will be either on assimilation state or accommodation state. Assimilation is when you can observe a new knowledge without a lot of effort just by adding to your existing scheme. Accommodation is when you need to seek information and try to modify and organize your existing scheme to observe a new information.

B: This video shows us one idea of Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development. https://wn.com/piagetian_tasks_videon.

2 In this week, I could not browse “Teachingchannel.org”. I am working for my project in statistic.

3 For this goal, I was contact the teachers last week for this month.

1. In this week, I have to finish the summary and the entries to submitted, so I did not have enough time to finish reading chapter 13. I read the begging of the 13th chapter from the “Human Learning 6th edition”. It is talking about sociocultural theory. I learned that Vygotsky suggested that there many factors have great influence on development such as language, interactions with adult, and self-talk. If we compared between Piaget theory and Vygotsky theory, we will notice that Piaget’s theory is more child-centered and Vygotsky’s theory is more adult-centered.

2. In this week, I could do any thigs for this goal because I have final exam in biology.

3. For this goal, I already contact the teacher before two weak ago.

Summary

Section 1

I began the semester with three goals. The first one is, I would like to understand theories of learning in this course. The second one is, I would like to learn theories that can help me to teach biology class for high school effectively. and the last goal is, I would like to be able to compare these theories that we will learn in this class with the theories that have been implemented in teaching biology courses in high schools in Saudi Arabic.

Section 2

I tried to make my plan to be reasonable to reach my goals and possible to fulfill. For the reading activates, I was reading a chapter each week from “Human Learning 6th edition” and I saw video for every chapter to understand more these theories. For second activates, I browsed “Teachingchannel.org” to get some ideas about the different kind of strategies every week. For last activity, I did interview with three teachers who teach biology class by email monthly, they are teacher Fatimah, Mona and Amal, and I was see their kind of theories they are using to teach their students in high schools in Saudi Arabic.

For the third plan I wrought that, I will contact the teacher every week but I could not dot. It is too much every week, I changed it every month.

Section 3

By reading a chapter from “Human Learning 6th edition” each week, Sometimes I could not read the hole chapter in one week since it took a great deal of time to understand it. I think this activity helped me to reach goals number 1. As a result, I learned a lot about theories and, now I am able to differentiate between them. Also, I have an idea about how our brain work and how we observe new information.

By browsing “Teachingchannel.org”, I get four ideas about the different kind of strategies. The first strategy for Student-centered discussion. This strategy taught me how I capable to manage, monitor and sustain a whole class discussion and How I can begin the lesson with student reflection and a guiding question equip students for the discussion. This is a good way to make my class effectively by students. The second strategy is that, technology is a good strategy to teach students and thy will be more understanding the lesson. I saw video explained me that, the impact of technology on the lesson. when I saw, the teacher used technology in her class, she made her class effectively, and students was happy. The third strategy is how I can “Create a class culture that supports learning”. I taught what is the relationship between culture and engagement and how does Ms. Wessling model her expectations. The last strategy is U-P-S Strategy, it is mean Assess how students understand, plan, and solve problems. I taught how does Ms. Mickle assess learning through each part of the U-P-S strategy, and how can students use this strategy to assess their own understanding, how could the data gathered from this strategy be used to inform instruction.

By contacting teachers every month, I found that they use the similar strategies to teach their student. Some of them use theology in the class like project or show student video and others do not uses technologies because they live in village the do not have any internet or new theology.

What are the ethical related issues related to using student progress data, from assessments

There are various ways to assess students besides the traditional summative assessment with various forms for multiple choice questions, short answer, essay, etc. Often times, teachers have to think outside the box and develop assessments that assess the same content and standard, but are done in an alternative way. Providing a choice in assessment options, assessment instruction supports differentiation to meet the learning preferences of diverse students in the learning environment.

For this assignment, you will develop an alternative assessment that is aligned with the set of standards chosen for your benchmark, and appropriate for the grade level and content area of your practicum placement.

Part 1: Assessment

From your chosen state standard in your benchmark, create a student-centered learning experience and alternative assessment for students to do something (project, presentation, brochure, etc.) with the content material.

Your alternative assessment should include:

  • Math and ELA state standards (from your benchmark).
  • Learning objective.
  • Formative questions to assess prior knowledge, probe for understanding, and promote independent learning prior to students beginning assessment during the instructional learning.
  • Complete description of instructions for learning experience.
  • Complete description of alternative assessment.

Part 2: Reflection

In 100-200 words, reflect and answer the following questions:

What are the ethical related issues related to using student progress data, from assessments, in order to promote growth and learning? How will you make sure you are being ethical in your use of data in your classroom?

Assignment Analyzing Cultural Relevance In Instruction

Review this week’s Instructor Guidance for additional information about completing this assignment. Contact your instructor for clarifications about this or any assessment in the course before the due date using the “Ask Your Instructor” forum. Then, also using the Grading Rubric as a guide for your performance on this assignment, construct your assignment to meet each of the content and written communication expectations.

Review your assignment with the Grading Rubric to be sure you have achieved the distinguished levels of performance for each criterion and submit the assignment for evaluation no later than Day 7.

Analyzing Cultural Relevance in Instruction In Chapter 12, Wardle (2013) summarizes the important characteristics of a culturally relevant teacher. Use this information as a guide or resource throughout this assignment to help inspire your thinking as you apply your knowledge of culturally relevant pedagogy toward specific solutions to problems facing a teacher with a very diverse student population. This exercise provides excellent practice over the application of culturally relevant principles in the design of effective instructional solutions. You will need to design such instructional solutions within the Final Project, so it is very important to practice such skills here. Specifically, for this assignment, you will view a brief video taken with a cell phone by a student in a high school social studies class. Student “Jeff Bliss” Mad at Teacher at Duncanville HighLinks to an external site. (Bliss, 2013) documents a meltdown Bliss experienced during his World History course at Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas.

Review the Instructor Guidance before this task. In your paper, include the following:

· Address the items below based on your inferences and ideas after viewing the events captured in the cellphone video. (2 points)

o Describe the problem from Jeff Bliss’s perspective as well as from Ms. Phung’s perspective.

o Explain what probably caused it.

o Identify who benefits and who loses.

o Indicate your position on this issue.

o Discuss how a more equitable, culturally relevant approach to the class could improve the situation.

o Express how Ms. Phung might respond differently to Jeff’s concerns.

o Describe any equity strategies you noticed or inferred being implemented in the video. (2.5 points)

o Suggest at least one strategy for each of the following four categories that the teacher could have utilized to help meet student needs in a more equitable fashion:

§ Instruction

§ Classroom Environment

§ Student Grouping

§ Student Recognition/leadership

o Describe evidence of any culturally relevant pedagogy in action in the cellphone video. (2.5. points)

o List at least three strategies that could be used to create a more culturally relevant classroom. Such strategies might be drawn from the following areas:

§ Maximizing academic success through relevant instructional experiences

§ Addressing cultural competence through reinforcing students’ cultural integrity

§ Involving students in the construction of knowledge

§ Building on students’ interests and linguistic resources

§ Tapping home and community resources

§ Understanding students’ cultural knowledge

§ Using interactive and constructivist teaching strategies

§ Examining the curriculum from multiple perspectives

§ Promoting critical consciousness through opportunities to challenge predominant elements of the students’ social norms

· Must be two to three double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing CenterLinks to an external site..

· Must include a separate title page with the following:

o Title of paper

o Student’s name

o Course name and number

o Instructor’s name

o Date submitted

· Must use at least three scholarly, peer-reviewed, credible sources in addition to the course text.

o The Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. If you have questions about whether a specific source is appropriate for this assignment, please contact your instructor. Your instructor has the final say about the appropriateness of a specific source for a particular assignment.
