Case Study for Issues in Higher Education

The materials in this case study are a combination of authentic public domain documents and simulated documents created specifically for the case study that draw on authentic research and data from government and scholarly sources, and from the opinions of experts in the field.

The scenario outlines real issues in higher education, but Rogal College is a fictional institution, invented for the purposes of this case study.

Scenario

You are on the “Programming & Curriculum Development” task force of a small, private college, Rogal College, which is trying to improve its national standing as an undergraduate institution. Your task is to take a stand on whether the institution should increase curricular focus, funding, and new hiring for professional and technical fields or maintain a more purely academic, liberal arts education with a focus on the humanities.

As you examine this issue, consider the following perspectives: What role does a college or university play in society? How will the college’s decision to alter or maintain its curricular focus affect students and alumni? How will the college’s decision affect funding and academic status for the institution? What is the best preparation Rogal can offer to help its students succeed after graduation? How will the task force’s decision affect pedagogy in the classroom? Finally, take into consideration various stakeholders: current and future students, alumni, current teaching staff, the administration, and business leaders.

Curriculum-Linked Assessment

Curriculum-Linked Assessment

In the discussion forums this week we learned about the use of screening assessments as a tool to indicate a potential concern about a child’s learning and development. After administering screening assessments, a typical next step is to evaluate any areas of concern that were indicated on the screener. One way in which this is accomplished is through creating learning activities and curriculum linked assessments. “If every intentional activity that goes on in education is part of the curriculum, then these activities should be assessed to determine if children are making progress in the curriculum” (text, section 7.1) Doing this allows for opportunities to assess and evaluate the child’s performance to see where his/her true areas of need are and to determine what further steps might need to be taken. Your assignment this week will give you the opportunity to put the process we just discussed into action. There are four steps to your assignment.

Step 1 (1.5 points): Choose one child from the example document, “Developmental Checklist Birth to FivePreview the document.” After choosing a child, write an analysis of the child. Your analysis should include the following:

  • Which checklist you are using
  • The age of the child
  • The information that you have learned from the checklist about the child’s strengths and developmental concerns you would have about this child that includes at least three different developmental areas from the checklist.

Step 2 (3 points): Create a learning objective from the child. Using this child and the domain of your choice from The Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. domains, choose a learning standard that relates to an area of need for the child you choose based on their checklist. Create a clear learning objective that aligns with this standard, which you can use to measure the child’s performance on the assessment you will create in Step 3.

For example, if the screener indicated that the child struggles with identifying shapes, you would choose to focus on a shape skill from the Mathematics Knowledge and Skills Domain. Your objective might be the child will be able to identify shapes correctly at least 80% of the time. Another example would be if the screener indicates that the child struggles to cooperate with others, you would choose a cooperation skill from the Social and Emotional Development Domain. Your objective for this might be the child will be cooperating when playing with a partner at least 90% of the time.

If you need assistance with how to create effective learning objectives, please view the Objectives section of the ECE/CD Lesson Planning Handbook that is available with your Constellation materials for the course or review section 7.1 of the course text. In your assignment include the following:

  • The learning standard you chose from the The Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework
  • A clear and measurable learning objective
  • A rationale that explains why you developed the learning objective you did and how it aligns with your learning standard. Make sure to include evidence from the checklist to support your choice.

Step 3 (4 points): Develop a curriculum linked developmentally appropriate assessment that assesses your learning objective. You will find helpful guidelines for creating your assessment in Chapter 7 of the text. Also, remember as is stated in section 7.3 of your text, not all assessments are paper and pencil tests so feel free to be creative with your assessment. For example, if you are creating an assessment on shapes you might have the children draw the names of the shapes you say, identify examples of the shapes in the room, or match a picture of the shape to its name. In your assignment include the following:

  • An example of or a detailed description of your assessment, along with specifically how you will document the child’s progress. For a more detailed explanation, please review the week three guidance.

Step 4 (2 points): Provide a rationale for your curriculum linked assessment. In your rationale, including the following:

  • Explain how you your curriculum linked assessment aligns with the guidelines for teacher developed assessments shared in section 7.3 of the course text.
  • Discuss how the level of learning in your objective matches the level of learning on the assessment
  • Explain how you will use the results from this assessment to differentiate, accommodate or modify, instruction and intervention. Utilize information from section 7.1- Curriculum Linked to Individual Learning from your course text to support your explanation.

Written Expectations

  • Content Development (.25 points): Use appropriate and pertinent content to address ideas within the context of the discipline, shaping the work as a whole.

Week 4 Discussion 1

Supporting and Supervising Staff

Choose one of the following questions that were asked of Ria Palet, from the National School District, in Chapter 7 of your textbook.

  1. How might you support and mentor a staff member who was struggling to meet the expectations of the job?  What would you do to support him/her?  Address at least two different issues in your post.  (Examples: issues with time management, maintaining confidentiality, and/or handling misbehavior.  You may use these or your own choices.)
  2. How might you challenge a staff member to continue to grow if she has been in the position successfully for a long time?  What would you do to support him/her?  Address at least two different issues in your post.  (Example: teaching in the same classroom/ same age for a number of years, has not explored the idea of varying curriculum, and/or has not explored professional development opportunities.)

Based on the question you choose, create a four-week plan to support your staff member.  The following must be included in your four-week plan:

  1. At least one resource and an explanation of why you included this resource to benefit your staff member.
  2. A reflection focus/question piece.  What is your end goal?
  3. Two face-to-face meetings with a predetermined focus question for both meetings.
  4. An evaluation component for the final meeting that will prove that this intervention was successful.  How will you know that your plan was successful?
  5. Complete your plan in a Word document to include the days you plan on meeting.

Your discussion post should be at least 250 words in length and main post must be supported by two references. Source(s) listed must be integrated into main post content in an APA compliant manner.

Guided Response:
After reviewing several of your classmates’ posts, choose two peers to respond to with the following:

  1. Add one additional resource and explain why this would be beneficial for this staff member.
  2. Add one additional reflection question that you believe would be good for the staff member and director to discuss.
  3. You must include the following in your response:
    • Why you think their plan is successful.
    • What you would suggest to increase the intensity of this plan, so the staff member is successful.
    • How you believe the staff member would react to this plan and why.

Week 4 Discussion 2

Week 4 – Discussion 2

Collaborating with Families

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), in the position statement on developmentally appropriate practice (2009), “Practitioners work in collaborative partnerships with families, establishing and maintaining regular, frequent two-way communication with them” (p. 23).  Trust between home and school is built over time, starting with the very first phone call or visit to the program.  It is crucial to begin a positive relationship with your students’ families in order to best support your students.

For this discussion, you will outline a program that you can implement at your center and with your teachers to foster a strong home-school relationship throughout the school year.

Include the following:

  1. One detailed strategy that you can implement the first week of school.
  2. A monthly strategy/theme from September to June (10 months/10 strategies)
  3. One benefit you expect to see from your focus

Your discussion post should be at least 250 words in length and main post must be supported by two references. Source(s) listed must be integrated into main post content in an APA compliant manner.

Guided Response: Review your peers’ strategies and choose two classmates to reply to with a further explanation.  Choose four of their monthly strategies and complete the following:

  1. Elaborate on each strategy by sharing an additional suggestion or activity to enhance communication.  (List the strategy/theme that you are referring to.)
  2. Offer an alternate suggestion for one of the chosen strategy/themes as a solution if the parent is not responsive (e.g., is not returning phone calls, is not visiting the school, or the parent avoids
