Personal Ethos And Mission Statement

Prepare

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, read Chapter 1 and Chapter 3 in your course textbook. Additionally, watch the TEDx Talk video, The Power of Personal Narrative | J. Christian Jensen | TEDxBYU (Links to an external site.).

Reflect

Every one of us has a personal history that shapes who we are and informs what we choose to do with our lives. We call this our personal narrative. This, in turn, is at the foundation of our ethos: the characteristic spirit manifested in our beliefs and actions. Think about your own narrative, the path that has led you here, and what you are actively doing to achieve your vision for the future. Additionally, consider the core values and strengths, both you already possess and to be developed through your education, that will lead you to that future.

Write

In 250 to 300 words, address the following points:

  • In one sentence, define where you want to be, both personally and professionally, in 5 years.
  • Summarize your personal narrative as a mission statement:
    • Describe the moment that led you to this present moment in your life.
    • Explain why you have chosen the path (academic, personal, career) that you have.
    • Identify the obstacles to achieving your goals.
    • Analyze what strengths and values you bring with you.
    • Evaluate how your education will help you further develop your strengths and values and overcome those obstacles.
    • Formulate your ultimate goal and describe what it means to you.

Determine the group or individuals who will receive the training:

Assignment 1: Analyze Training Needs (25% of grade)

Select or create an organization for the authentic assessment. In this first assignment, you will begin to develop a training needs analysis (TNA) for your chosen organization. Note: It is recommended that you choose your own organization (where you are currently employed). If you are not employed, reach out to the professor to help with selection of an organization. DO NOT use Walmart, Target, or Starbucks as your organization.  For this assignment, you will work on items 1-5 only.

NOTE: you will include a summary of assignment one as the intro to assignment two!

  1. Provide information about the organization and its needs regarding the training issue:
    1. This should include general, high level information about the company in terms of product/services, size, geography, workforce attributes, etc.  The training issue is the problem or challenge (could be deficiency OR need based on a predicted change in the operation, workforce, etc.).  Here this should be “high level”, focused on the organization (not specifically the individual workers yet).
  2. Determine the group or individuals who will receive the training:
    1. This should include information about the target audience as it will impact the training developed – including demographic information, type of work, location of work, etc.
  3. Identify the training issue:
    1. This is a continuation from item 1.  Here you will focus more on the individual workers and/or teams.
    2. NOTE: the training issue should NOT be that they lack training.  It should be tied to a performance deficiency or need.
  4. Provide a training needs assessment questionnaire:
    1. The questionnaire should provide insight into the training need/gap; therefore it should focus on the training issue itself – choose questions that provide insight to the issue.  In a sense, the questionnaire helps you identify and analyze the “why” (e.g., if you are addressing a performance issue, the questionnaire would help you hone in on the real issue).
    2. SUGGESTION: think hard about using questions that ask how the audience “feels” about something – you want to obtain the most tangible and useful information.
    3. NOTE: you will NOT administer the questionnaire!
    4. Your questionnaire should be included as an appendix to your paper – inserting questions within the narrative of your paper does not suffice.
  5. Explain how the questionnaire will be utilized and will lead to the development of training outcomes/learning objectives within your written report:
    1. Here you will essentially validate the questions posed in your questionnaire – if you can’t do that, you should probably revisit your questions.
      1. You will probably not have the time or resources to implement the questionnaire or compile all the organizational and training-specific information necessary to complete the TNA. (If you are able to get real data and results, great! Otherwise, be creative and fabricate results.) The goal is to understand how a TNA is done effectively and to practice completing one.

(Assignment 2 items below)

  1. Include at least three training outcomes, based on the TNA
  2. Identify the expected performance of the group or individuals as a result of the training
  3. Identify performance gaps and detail how training can help close those gaps

REMINDER: Students must use at least 3 class resources for each assignment to support your position with course evidence. Review the grading rubric which indicates what will be graded.

Case: Developing Nurse Practitioners at the College of St. Catherine

Describe data-based strategies that would support and communicate the need for change at the institution described in your selected case study. Illustrate how the institution’s previous data-driven decisions are presented as obstacles to change in relation to student success, retention, and persistence. Support your ideas for use of specific data-driven tools to overcome obstacles and support change strategies at your institution. This milestone submission addresses critical element III, section B (data-driven decisions) and critical element IV, section G (data-based strategies communicate change) of the final project, and it serves as an initial draft for these elements. Substantial instructor feedback will be provided for foundational support of the final project.

As you consider the case study you selected and work through course content, consider ways to build on this milestone submission to expand your analysis, assessment, and application of these pieces of the project for your final submission in Module Nine. As you work on your milestone submission, it is important to note that not every aspect of the final project will be addressed by your milestone submission. When preparing your milestone and final project submissions, be sure to support your work with supplemental information and additional resources beyond the required resources and readings.

Follow rubric verbatim:

HEA 630 Milestone Six Guidelines and Rubric: Assessment Tools to Inform Data Decisions In higher education administration today, we often hear the term assessment being used in context much more than instruction. Demands are being made from internal and external constituents, regulatory and accrediting agencies and organizations, government affiliates, future and past students, and many others to request, encourage, and require colleges and universities to provide data to support decisions being made. Often, those decisions are based on change initiatives that are mandated, suggested, or brought as a completely new idea. Regardless of how the change begins, it must first be informed with data. Many different assessment tools and strategies are used to provide qualitative and quantitative data required to develop informed change ideas, to support processes and policies used to communicate and initiate the change, and to provide information about how well the change is being managed over time. Data must be collected to support the reason for the change, the processes used to manage the change, and to determine whether the change is working as expected. Assessment tools provide the support required for the decisions made in higher education. As a higher education administrator in this class and in your career, your job will be to use those tools effectively to improve your chances of success. Prompt: In Module Seven, you will continue to provide support for the change effort by investigating the use of data to inform the decision and the process used to implement the decision. You will describe data based strategies that would support and communicate the need for change at the institution described in your selected case study. Identify both qualitative and quantitative assessments that have been or might be used in the case study. Has the data collected been used to adequately support the decisions made? Are additional tools needed or have the tools not been effectively used to gather the correct data to support the decision and to overcome obstacles? Illustrate how the institution’s previous data-driven decisions are presented as obstacles to change in relation to student success, retention, and persistence. Think about the strategies that might be effective in ensuring implementation success and then offer examples of qualitative and quantitative data that might be used. As you consider the case study you selected and work through course content, identify ways to build on this milestone submission to expand your analysis, assessment, and application of these pieces of the project for your final submission in Module Nine. As you work on your milestone submission, it is important to note that not every critical element of the final project will be addressed by your milestone submission. When preparing your milestone and final project submissions, be sure to support your work with supplemental information and additional resources beyond the required resources and readings. The following critical elements must be addressed in your paper:

 Illustrate how the institution’s previous data-driven decisions are presented as obstacles to change in student success, retention, and persistence. Be sure to think about various obstacles change agents must overcome while using data to drive decisions and direction.

 Data-Based Strategies Communicate Change: Describe the data-based strategies that would communicate the rationale for change to both internal and external constituents. Be sure to think about how data can reinforce the need for change. You might consider how data can influence support for change.
