Week 2 Practice Worksheet

Prepare a written response to the following questions.

Chapter 3

1. For the following scores, find the mean, median, and the mode. Which would be the most appropriate measure for this data set?

2, 2, 0, 5,1, 4,1, 3, 0, 0, 1, 4, 4, 0,1, 4, 3, 4, 2, 1

2. Based on the scale of measurement for each variable listed below, which measure of central tendency is most appropriate for describing the data?

a. The time (in years) it takes a sample of students to graduate college

b. The blood type (e.g., Type A, B, AB, O) of a group of participants

c. The rankings of college undergraduate academic programs

Chapter 4

3. An expert reviews a sample of 10 scientific articles (n = 10) and records the following numbers of error in each article: 0, 4, 2, 8, 2, 3, 1, 0, 5, and 7. Compute the SS, the variance, and the standard deviation for this sample using the definitional and computational formulas.

4. A psychologist interested in political behavior measured the square footage of the desks in the official office for four U.S. governors and of four chief executive officers (CEOs) of major U.S. corporations. The figures for the governors were 44, 36, 52, and 40 square feet. The figures for the CEOs were 32, 60, 48, 36 square feet.

a. Figure the means and standard deviations for the governors and CEOs.

b. Explain, to a person who has never had a course in statistics, what you have done.

c. Note the ways in which the means and standard deviations differ, and speculate on the possible meaning of these differences, presuming that they are representative of U.S. governors and large corporations’ CEOs in general.

5. Radel and colleagues (2011) conducted a study of how feeling overly controlled makes you desire—even unconsciously—more freedom. In their study, 52 Canadian undergraduates played a video game in a laboratory and were randomly assigned to either:

a. an automony deprivation condition, in which they were told to follow instructions precisely, constantly given instructions over a loudspeaker, and carefully observed on everything they did.

b. a neutral condition, which was much more laid back.

After this activity, they were asked to do a “lexical decision task” (a standard approach for measuring unconscious responses) in which they were shown a series of words and nonwords in random order and had to press “C” if it was a real word or “N” if not. Half of the real words were related to autonomy (e.g., freedom, choice) and half were neutral (e.g., whisper, hammer). The key focus of the study was on how long it took people to press the button *(“response latency”) for each kind of real word, averaged over the many words of each type. The table below shows the mean and standard deviation across the participants of these four categories of results. Thus, for example, 782 milliseconds (thousandths of a second) is the average time it took participants in the autonomy-deprived condition to respond to the autonomy-related words, and 211 is the standard deviation across the 26 participants’ average response time in that condition. Explain the numbers in this table to a person who has never had a course in statistics. (Be sure to explain some specific numbers, as well as the general principle of the mean and standard deviation.) For your interest, the pattern of results shown here supported the researchers’ hypothesis: “Relative to a neutral instructional climate, a controlling climate thwarting the need for autonomy…enhanced accessibility for autonomy-related words.” (p.924).

Mean Latencies (in Milliseconds) in the Lexical Task Assessing Accessibility for Autonomy-Related Constructs (Experiment 1)
  Condition
  Autonomy Deprivation   Neutral
Construct M SD   M SD
Autonomy-related words 782 211   857 243
Neutral words 835 258   841 301

Chapter 5

6. On a standard measure of hearing ability, the mean is 300 and the standard deviation is 20. Give the Z scores for persons whose raw scores are 340, 310, and 260. Give the raw scores for persons whose Z scores on this test are 2.4, 1.5, and -4.5.

7. Using the unit normal table, find the proportion under the standard normal curve that lies to the right of each of the following:

a. z = 1.00

b. z = -1.05

c. z = 0

d. z = 2.80

e. z = 1.96

8. Suppose that the scores of architects on a particular creativity test are normally distributed. Using a normal curve table (page 477-480), what percentage of architects have Z scores:

a. Above .10?

b. Below .10?

c. Above .20?

d. Below .20?

e. Above 1.10?

f. Below 1.10?

g. Above -.10?

h. Below -.10?

Chapter 6

9. A statistics instructor wants to measure the effectiveness of his teaching skills in a class of 102 students (N =102). He selects students by waiting at the door to the classroom prior to his lecture and pulling aside every third student to give him/her a questionnaire.

a. Is this sample design an example of random sampling? Explain.

b. Assuming that all students attend his class that day, how many students will he select to complete his questionnaire?

10. Suppose that you were going to conduct a survey of visitors to your campus. You want the survey to be as representative as possible.

a. How would you select the people to survey?

b. Why would that be your best method?

Disease Model Versus Positive Psychology Worksheet

William is a 44-year old project manager for a large commercial construction firm. He started out as a gifted carpenter who greatly enjoyed designing and building custom furniture. However, after several promotions, he focuses on bringing in new business. He spends many work hours at his computer or on the telephone. He is divorced and rarely sees his two daughters. In recent years, he has gained weight and is displeased with his appearance, but has no interest in or energy for exercise. He does not sleep well because he worries about business problems at night. He was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure. Although he is financially secure, he rarely takes vacations or socializes outside of the office. He has begun to feel that his life is pointless.

1.Discuss William’s situation from the perspective of traditional psychology. What information would be most important? What conclusions and recommendations might be made by a psychologist working from the disease model?

2.Discuss William’s situation from the perspective of positive psychology. What information would be most important? What conclusions and recommendations might be made by a psychologist working from the positive psychology model?

Draft of Client System Role Play Script

Project: Draft of Client System Role Play Script

So far in this course, you have examined the three levels of social work practice: micro, mezzo and macro. You also have explored how the GIM steps and specific practice skills apply to each level of practice. In order to demonstrate your understanding of these concepts, you will develop a script of a client session that represents the techniques you might use to implement the GIM steps and practice skills. This script may depict a client interaction that represents any step in the GIM. For example, you might choose to show an initial encounter where you exhibit engagement and assessment skills. Maybe you might choose to show a glimpse into a session where intervention has become necessary for a client you have seen several times. Or you might plan and then execute a meeting to either evaluate a client’s treatment or terminate the relationship with a client. Later in this course, you will record a video of a role play based on this script.

For this assignment, use the Role Play Script Template provided in this week’s Resources, to draft and submit your role play script for Instructor approval and feedback.

Role Play Script (25 pages):

Your role play script should include:

  • A description of the client system (depending on the client level you selected—micro, mezzo or macro).
  • An explanation of the presenting concern
  • A description of the client session scene  in which you  implement the GIM step and practice skills you have selected for working with this client system.
  • A detailed description of the actual dialogue that takes place between you, as the social worker, and the client(s). Note that the dialogue should depict the techniques you would use to implement the GIM step and the practice skills you selected for the client interaction.
  • A description of the visual cues that both the social worker and the client might exhibit during the interaction that support the GIM step and practice skills you selected.
  • An explanation of the techniques you might use to implement the GIM step and practice skills you selected and why.Description: Walden Logo

Psychology Debate

Instructions: Psychology has had a problematic relationship regarding its status and recognition as a “Science”, and part of the problem has to do with how we perceive and value what is scientific (and what is not scientific). In this sense, the problem goes beyond affirming that Psychology is (or isn’t ) a Science. Taking this into consideration elaborate an argument that discusses one (1) of the following:

A) Discuss the debate regarding concept of “paradigm” and its relationship to Psychology (as a discipline and form of knowledge), taking into consideration how this influences how we view Psychology as a Science (and what kind or type of science).

B) Discuss some of the proposals regarding Psychology’s status as a science and its problems regarding methodology and epistemology.

Word format, a letter size twelve (12) and a spacing of one and a half (1.5) between sentences (or line spacing in the paragraph options). The extension of the work should not be less than three (3) pages or greater than five (5) pages of content (not title page or cover of any kind is required).
