Assignment 3: Final Project Annotated Bibliography

Craft a research question on the topic you selected in your first discussion question post. Then locate at least five articles from peer-reviewed journals that pertain to your question that will be used to write the introduction section of your research proposal.

Submit these five citations in the form of an APA-style reference page. Under each citation, write one paragraph summarizing the main points of the article. As you read your articles, keep the following questions at hand; these will help you generate the information about each article.

    • What were the topic/research questions being investigated?

    • How was the study conducted (participants, materials, procedure, etc.)?

    • What did the results reveal?

    • How might these methodological considerations affect the research findings and the conclusions drawn from them?

  • How does this article fit in with your paper? How did it influence your own ideas about your paper?

Based on your reading of the literature, what do you expect to find?

Include a hypothesis and a title page for your submission

The Relation between Heredity and Suicidal Behavior

have copied the last assignment we did and enclosed the abstract for part one. If it needs to be changed then please change this. I need this by Sunday afternoon.

Assignment 2: Identifying Themes

For this assignment, you will develop a Title page, Abstract, and a References page. Articulate your main research/focal question as the opening for your paper. Be sure it is specific, researchable, and important to the field. Then go on to list a detailed outline of the body of the paper, (including all headings and subheadings). Be sure to format your entire paper, including the headings and subheadings according to APA style. Also include ten references with this outline.

Abstract

The Relation between Heredity and Suicidal Behavior has many different experiments to use as examples. Some say that most individuals inherit the suicidal behavior and other does not. This paper will examine different experiments on the outcome of this topic and what might be influenced by genes that might run in a family. Then again there are the other factors that might show the influence of other suicidal behaviors. The outcome will provide different articles that will provide information on the behavior characteristics of suicidal behavior and what the interpersonal psychology theory of suicidal behavior just might be.

The Relation between Heredity and Suicidal Behavior

Introduction

The paper will focus on examining the relation between heredity and suicidal behavior and also look into the interpersonal psychology theory of suicidal behavior.  The paper will seek to affirm that suicidal behavior is influenced by genes that run in the family lineage and as such it could be inherited. Various theories can be used to explain the relationship between hereditary and suicidal behavior.  One these theories are Interpersonal psychology theory of suicidal behavior.  This theory provides that, acquired capability, belongingness and burdensome are the 3 main determinants of suicidal behavior. The paper will also provide articles review on the interpersonal psychology theory of suicidal behavior.

The Research questions

This paper is guided by the research question; what does the research show about the relation between heredity and suicidal behavior. This will help in formulating the best research methods and topics for the study.

Article review

Article 1

In the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology a meta-analysis research paper on the Brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene in suicidal behavior is presented. This is a meta-analysis work that looks into the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene in suicidal behavior. The analysis links the BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) to suicidal behavior amongst individuals. The paper uses data from previously published samples and also its own present sample of 3352 subjects among which 1202 have a history of suicidal behavior. The analysis provides a trend in which the Met allele and genotypes carrying Met confer the risk of suicide and are also associated with the history of suicide attempts. The research therefore concludes that the BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) is a contributing factor to suicidality. The research gives room for investigating the role of BDNF in suicidal behavior (Zai, Manchia, De Luca, Tiwari, Chowdhury, Zai, Kennedy, 2012).

Article 2

An article presented by (Smith, Ribeiro, Mikolajewski, Taylor, Joiner, Iacono, 2012) sought to examine of environmental and genetic contributions to the determinants of suicidal behavior among male twins. This is an original psychiatric research published in 2012. It examines the genetic and environmental contributions to the determinants of suicidal behavior among male wins. In light of the interpersonal psychology theory of suicide, the research focused on the individual differences in the proximal, jointly necessary and sufficient causes of suicidal behavior. According to the interpersonal psychology theory, acquired capability, belongingness and burdensome are the 3 main determinants of suicidal behavior. The research uses a sample of 348 male twins in their adolescent age and employs univariate biometric models to help estimate how the variance in belongingness, acquired capabilities and burdensomeness are affected by the magnitudes of non-additive genetic (D), additive genetic (A), non-shared environmental (E) and shared environmental (C) (Smith, Ribeiro, Mikolajewski, Taylor, Joiner, Iacono, 2012).

The research results showed that the best fitting model for acquired capability allowed for environmental and genetic effects, while the best fitting model for belongingness and burdensomeness allowed for non-shared and shared environmental effects. The research findings also provide that burdensomeness and belongingness could be more appropriate target for intervention compared to acquired capabilities (Smith et al, 2012).

Article 3

Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology presents a case study on familial clustering of suicidal behavior and psychopathology in young suicide attempters. This is a case study that focuses on the familial clustering of suicidal behavior and psychopathology in young suicide attempts. Besides borrowing from previously done studies the case study takes the form of a population-based record-linkage study with a nested control design. The results show that out of the sample used, almost 47% of all the suicide attempts are likely to be connected to family psychopathology, and 13% are associated with family suicide attempt while 7% are associated with suicide completion and the remaining 25% are associated with their own psychology. The research provides that the evaluation of the suicidal behavior in families would form a great base for risk assessment especially among young psychiatric patients (Mittendorfer-Rutz, Rasmussen, Wasserman, 2008).

Conflicting Viewpoints Essay – Part I

Assignment 1.1: Conflicting Viewpoints Essay – Part I
Prewriting
Due Week 2 and worth 30 points

When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking by playing the “Believing Game.” The Believing Game is about making the effort to “believe” – or at least consider – the reasons for an opposing view on an issue.

The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.
In Part I of the assignment (due Week 2), you will first read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes: “The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful” at http://www.procon.org/sourcefiles/believinggame.pdf. Next, you will review the Procon.org Website in order to gather information. Then, you will engage in prewriting to examine your thoughts.
Note: In Part II of the assignment (due Week 4), you will write an essay geared towards synthesizing your ideas.

Part I – Prewriting: Follow the instructions below for this prewriting activity.  Use complete sentences and adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.
1. Select one (1) of the approved topics from the www.procon.org Website and state your position on the issue.
2. From the Procon.org Website, identify three (3) premises (reasons) listed under either the Pro or Con section – whichever section opposes your position.
3.For each of the three (3) premises (reasons) that oppose your position on the issue, answer these “believing” questions suggested by Elbow:

  1. What’s interesting or helpful about this view?
  2. What would I notice if I believed this view?
  3. In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

  • Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
  • Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
  • Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Identify the informal fallacies, assumptions, and biases involved in manipulative appeals and abuses of language.
  • Create written work utilizing the concepts of critical thinking.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in critical thinking skills and informal logic.
