Describe Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development. Include in your description the major hallmarks of each stage

1. The presence of teratogens during pregnancy creates the risk of problems in
development. Your textbook identifies several principles that govern the
relationship between teratogens and normal development. List and describe
three of those principles.

2. Describe Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development. Include in your
description the major hallmarks of each stage.

3. Discuss object permanence. Be sure to include its relationship to other areas
of development.

4. Five-year-old Michela appears to be talking to herself as she is putting
together a tea party with several of her dolls. Describe Vygotsky’s take on
this behavior (e.g., Is this normal behavior? Is this a helpful behavior? Will
this behavior go away?).

5. In intelligence testing, explain the terms mental age (MA), chronological age
(CA) and intelligence quotient (IQ)

6. What are the four basic types of attachment described by Bowlby and
Ainsworth? Include effects on later life.

7. What is the difference between instrumental, hostile, and relational
aggression? Give an example of each type of aggression. Also, who are most
likely to be victimized by such bullies?

8. Discuss the four phases of identity formation, as presented by Marcia. Make
sure that you list each phase and comment on what is likely to happen in
that phase.

Assignment 1: Culture-Bound Syndromes

How alike are mental disorders in different cultures throughout the world? How would a health professional in the United States approach the process of treating someone who presents a cultural syndrome? Those are questions that you will answer through your first Week 6 Assignment.

Your Learning Resources this week feature the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V, 5th edition). It is the main reference used by U.S. mental health professionals to identify and describe symptoms of mental disorders. Your required reading includes content in the manual on cultural syndromes.

There is no one-to-one correspondence between a cultural syndrome and a DSM diagnosis. However, a psychologist would need to utilize a respected diagnostic tool like the DSM as a starting point in determining the most appropriate treatment for a suffering person.

Your Assignment this week is an opportunity to think like a mental health professional while applying what you have learned about cross-cultural psychology. For this Assignment, you will explore different cultural syndromes and analyze the application of DSM-V diagnostic criteria to specific syndromes of your choice .

To prepare:

  • Review Chapter 9 in your course text, with particular attention to the sections on cultural syndromes and DSM-V.
  • Review Table 9.1, “Specific Cultural Syndromes,” in the course text (pp. 259–261). There are 21 cultural disorders identified. Select seven cultural syndromes as the focus of your Assignment .
  • Review the DMS-V chapter on Cultural Formation and the Appendix, “Glossary of Cultural Concepts of Distress,” in the Week 6 Learning Resources. Note that multiple potential diagnoses are listed for some syndromes, but you will need to select and defend one diagnosis.
  • Explore the entire DSM-V, also provided in your Week 6 Learning Resources. Consider how the cultural syndromes you selected may be diagnosed when applying the DSM-V criteria.
  • Access the Handout Worksheet in the Learning Resources. You will use it to complete your Assignment.
By Day 7

Submit a completed worksheet with information on seven cultural syndromes of your choice.

In the designated rows of the worksheet, provide the following for each of your selected cultural syndromes:

  • Identify the name of the cultural syndrome.
  • Describe the main symptoms and behaviors of the cultural syndrome.
  • Identify the DSM-V disorder that you believe is a possible diagnosis of the cultural syndrome.
  • List key symptoms and behaviors related to the chosen DSM-V diagnosis that also relate to the cultural syndrome.
  • Provide a brief explanation of your choice of the DSM-V disorder and how you see it connecting to the cultural syndrome.

Note: Support the responses within your Assignment with evidence from the assigned Learning Resources. Provide a reference list for resources you used for this Assignment.

ZAP Lab Assignment

Complete “Mental Scanning” on the ZAPs site.

  1. Read the Introduction to “Mental Scanning” in your ZAPS Lab Workbook and on the ZAPs website.
  2. Complete the Experiment.
  3. View the Data section (where appropriate).
  4. Read the Discussion section.
  5. Answer the following question in 100 to 200 words total.  Make sure you appropriately paraphrase and cite sources used.

Do the typical results of mental scanning experiments support the idea that mental images are like pictures (the depiction or Analogy Theory of imagery) or that images are not exactly like pictures (the descriptive or Propositional Theory of Imagery)?  Explain why and what other findings support the same theory?

Describe the treatment(s), conditions, intervention(s), etc.

For this task, you will pull together your learning from the previous assignments to create a quantitative or qualitative mock research proposal in PowerPoint. Assume you will be presenting your proposal to the committee that decides who will receive funding for their study. The required components for your PowerPoint presentation are as follows (consider using 1-2 slides for each area). Begin your presentation with a brief description of your topic of interest.

  • Research Question and Hypothesis.
Select a research question that would be appropriate for your area of specialization or experience. Note the research question, as well as the null and alternative hypotheses. Be sure to clearly identify the specific independent and dependent variables you would like to study.
  • Research Method.
Clearly state the specific method that you selected to use with as much detail as possible, along with a rationale as to why it is appropriate given your research question. Which of the four research goals does this question address?
  • Population.
Define the population of interest for your study and its characteristics. This should include, but is not limited to 1) age; 2) gender; 3) ethnicity; 4) additional cultural factors; and 5) education level.
  • Sampling.
Define your method of sampling the population (for example random, convenience, etc.). State how you would gain access to the participants. Justify your choice of the sampling method.
  • Procedures.
Describe the treatment(s), conditions, intervention(s), etc. that you could potentially use. Explain and justify your choices.
  • Measures.
Briefly describe the measures you would use, what scale they are a part of, how they fit, etc.
  • Data Type and Collection.
State the type of data you need to collect and how it would be collected. Explain how the data you collect will answer your Research Question. Discuss how this data and collection method is appropriate for your qualitative research design. Justify your choices.
  • Ethical Protection of Participants.
Describe any ethical issues you foresee with your study. Make a preliminary assessment of the level of risk associated with participation in your study that might need to be raised with the Institutional Review Board.
  • Validity.
Discuss ways in which the results of your study may not be valid, such as threats to internal and external validity. Examine any problems or limitations in your design that may lead to concerns here, along with possible concerns regarding the role of the research, and any biases, values, personal interests, etc. that might influence your study.
  • Role of the Researcher.
Briefly, but explicitly, state biases, values, and personal interest in the area of study and your experience with it. Predict how these would affect your study.

Incorporate appropriate animations, transitions, and graphics as well as speaker notes for each slide. The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists and should cite material appropriately.

Support your presentation with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included.

Length: 15-20 slides (with a separate reference slide)
Notes Length: 100-150 words for each slide
