Capstone Paper Section 4: Contributions to Positive Social Change

How will you use your education to contribute to social change and the greater global good? How might you, even in some small way, change the world? For this week’s Assignment, consider how your chosen role within the field of psychology can contribute to social change.

To prepare:

Read Walden University’s definition of positive social change:

“Walden University defines positive social change as a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies. Positive social change results in the improvement of human and social conditions.

This definition of positive social change provides an intellectually-comprehensive and socially-constructive foundation for the programs, research, professional activities, and products created by the Walden academic community. In addition, Walden University supports positive social change through the development of principled, knowledgeable, and ethical scholar-practitioners, who are and will become civic and professional role models by advancing the betterment of society.”

Next, read the article “Expanding Our Understanding of Positive Social Change” by Callahan et al. (2012). Think about a specific scenario within your chosen professional role and how it may fit within Walden’s definition of social change.

To Complete this Assignment:

By Day 7, submit a 2- to 3-page paper that discusses a particular aspect of your chosen professional role within the context of social change. For example, you might discuss being a counselor who provides pro-bono counseling to abused women or being a sports psychologist who offers visualization training for at-risk youth involved in school sports.

Explain why you chose your particular example and why it is important to include an aspect of social change in both career and personal endeavors. Next, explain the particular web map of social activity that would result from your chosen example. Follow the examples given in the article, with your actual text being at least three paragraphs long. There is no need to create the actual web map diagram. Finally, find one scholarly article, and explain how it informs your position.

Note: Support the responses within your Assignment with evidence from the assigned Learning Resources. Provide a reference list for resources you used for this Assignment.

Select two primary research articles.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper on the efficacy of group counseling in regard to your selected issue.

Include the following:

•Describe the type of group researched and how it differs from other types of groups.

•Explain the results on efficacy and overall implications for group counselors. •Identify ethical considerations for treating this issue in this setting.  Include a minimum of two sources.

Format your paper according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

Compare and contrast the general theories proposed by Pavlov and Skinner.

Traditional Learning Theories

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, please read McSweeney  & Murphy (2014) Part 1: Basic Classical Conditioning (Chapters 1  through 3) and Part 3: Basic Operational Conditioning (Chapters 8  through 10), and view the required video Classical and Operant Conditioning (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

Include the following components in your initial post:

  • Compare and contrast the general theories proposed by Pavlov and Skinner.
  • Examine and describe the researcher’s contribution(s) to psychology theory and practice.
  • Examine the major theoretical approaches proposed by the authors  including any related research methods and/or assessment instruments  associated with him or her.
  • Evaluate any issues and cultural considerations associated with your assigned theorist.
  • Analyze and describe how the American Psychological Association  (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct might  affect the implementation of your theorist’s personality assessments.
  • Assess the types of personality measurements and research designs  associated with your assigned theorist and describe how they have  evolved.

In addition to the required resources for the learning theories,  research a minimum of one peer-reviewed article from the Ashford  University Library regarding classical or operant conditioning within  the field of psychology. Your initial post should be a minimum of 500  words.

Guided Response: Review several of your colleagues’  posts and respond substantively to at least three of your peers by 11:59  p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required  replies early each week to stimulate more meaningful and interactive  discourse in your discussions. Continue to monitor the discussion forum  until 5:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) on Day 7 of the week and  respond to anyone who replies to your initial post. Peer responses may  vary in length but should be detailed and thought provoking. Your grade  will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your  responses.

Consider the following in your responses:

  • Were the theories complementary, or did they exist in conflict?
  • Provide specific examples of divergence between the theories as described.
  • Were there associated issues and/or cultural considerations your  classmate did not mention that should have been included in his or her  initial post?
  • What ethical consideration(s) should have been included?
  • How does your explanation of classical and operant conditioning differ from your peers’ explanations?

Pose questions that could encourage facilitation of the discussion.  Look for peers whose posts have not yet been responded to and reply to  these so that everyone has a chance to reflect and develop their  knowledge more fully.
