Explain how the conclusion of the counterargument follows from its premises.

Counter argument for informal logic class

In your paper,

  • Present a revised argument in standard form, with each premise and the conclusion on a separate line.
  • Present a counterargument in standard form, with each premise and the conclusion on a separate line.
  • Provide support for each premise of your counterargument. Clarify the meaning of the premise and supporting evidence for the premise.
    • Pay special attention to those premises that could be seen as controversial. Evidence may include academic research sources, supporting arguments, or other ways of demonstrating the truth of the premise (for more ideas about how to support the truth of premises take a look at the instructor guidance for this week). This section should include at least one scholarly source.
  • Explain how the conclusion of the counterargument follows from its premises. [One paragraph]
  • Discuss the primary points of disagreement between sincere and intelligent proponents of both sides. [One to two paragraphs]
    • For example, you might list any premises or background assumptions on which you think such proponents would disagree and briefly state what you see as the source of the disagreement, you could give a brief explanation of any reasoning that you think each side would find objectionable, or you could do a combination of these.
  • Present the best objection to your original argument. Clearly indicate what part of the argument your objection is aimed at, and provide a paragraph of supporting evidence for the objection. Reference at least one scholarly research source. [One to two paragraphs]

How do the sources differ with respect to the type of information provided?

The assignment: (1–2 pages)

  • Considering both “typical” and “atypical” (i.e., pseudohermaphrodites) sexual development, briefly analyze the effects sex hormones seem to have on the development of gender-related behavioral and psychological characteristics in humans. In other words, what “masculine” characteristics are related to male hormones, and what “feminine” characteristics are related to female hormones?
  • Briefly summarize the journal article you found, including discussion of the following points, if relevant:
    • At what age and in what ways the subject(s) demonstrated characteristics of transgender.
    • Possible sources (causes) of these characteristics, if addressed in the article.
    • Description and outcome of any treatments that were attempted, if addressed.
  • Compare and contrast the two sources of information (textbook and journal article) regarding biology and gender identity. Include all of the following that are relevant:
    • How do the sources differ with respect to the type of information provided? In other words, what information can be gained from a literature review (textbook) versus a case study/research report (journal article)?
    • On what points do the two sources agree?
    • On what points do the two sources disagree?
    • How do the two sources complement one another in helping you to understand the biological basis of gender identity? Be specific, using examples where appropriate.

Explain in your own words why Plato thinks sense-perception is not true knowledge

Length:  500-850 words (approximately 2-3 pages, double-spaced, 12 font)

Topic:  Plato argues there is a difference between sense-perception and knowledge.  He illustrates this difference in numerous places.  For instance, he discusses the inner workings of the cave (discussed in chapter 2 of Socrates to Sartre and chapter 3 of Demystified), as well as the division of various levels of knowledge in his divided line (see chapter 3 in Socrates to Sartre).

This distinction should seem strange, however.  Most of us probably think that we know the world through our senses; we merely open our eyes or touch an object in front of us to confirm or deny what is real and what is not.  In line with this, people often say that ‘Seeing is believing’ and ‘Show me the money!’, two adages which suggest that unless we’re given direct sensory evidence for a belief we ought to disbelieve (or at least withhold judgement about) it.

Drawing on your reading from the first week, write a paper in which you do the following:

Explain in your own words why Plato thinks sense-perception is not true knowledge, what Plato thinks true knowledge consists of, and whether you agree with his position or not.  (Whether you accept Plato’s claims or not, you should provide good reasons to support your belief.)  In doing so, make sure to relate your explanation to Plato’s discussion of these issues in the cave allegory and the divided line.
